Lumenol

"Lumenol  Is a brightly glowing, luminous liquid that is most often made from processed Lumenite. It can also be refined from the gemstone mineral Luxite, but those are much rarer, harder to acquire, and much more expensive to manufacture properly.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The liquid form of Lumenol is a translucent glowing fluid of various colors. In the experimental solid form, the material becomes a harder more durable, brightly glowing glass of various colors.

Physical & Chemical Properties

After the manufacturing process, Lumenol is in a radiant liquid form that glows with a warm, bright light. The colors of the liquid vary with the rarity of the Luxite minerals used in the process.

Geology & Geography

While this material is not found in liquid form in nature, its parent rock, Lumenite is found near ancient magma flows rich in silica. The ancient hills near the town of Arcana are known to have large concentrations of Lumenite. Additionally, for some reason the low laying Rainbow Mountains have a peculiar, solid, yet still glowing, Lumenol coating to most of them.

Origin & Source

This material can only be extracted from the rock known as Lumenite or from the tiny Luxite crystals associated with the stone.

Life & Expiration

If left exposed to the air, the liquid slowly loses it glow and changes into a solid, grey glassy material.

History & Usage

History

Lumenol was initially used as permanent light source and alternative to flickering, smokey, and fading candles. Its greater efficiency and high demand created an expensive market for the glowing liquid. Soon only the most affluent could afford it outside of the cities that manufactured it. The growing belief that Lumenol could keep away evil spirits and creatures of the night, added to its value and scarcity as supplies quickly diminished. However, with several newly discovered Lumenite mines opening, the supply should once again start flowing.

Discovery

It is said that Lumenol was discovered about 1500 years ago by the dwarf, Flintor Ironvein and the elf, Espan Hawkwind in an effort to produce a more protective and permanent light against some of the lightphobic creatures in the area.

Everyday use

Lumenol is most commonly used as a permanent, if expensive, light source that will take the shape of any container that it is placed into. Several magical studies are ongoing into additional mystical uses for the radiant liquid.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Some remote villages that can produce their own Lumenol, have begun hanging small glass globes filled with the shining liquid around the outer perimeter, in order to keep out the evil spirits and night creatures.

Refinement

This liquid does not naturally exist in nature and requires a special refinement process. If a Metal Caller is not available, then cooperative work between an expert metallurgist and a high level magic user is required so that they can extract the liquid from either the Luxite crystals or from the Lumenite rock itself. This is most often done with the more common Lumenite rock as it is an easier and cheaper procedure. The liquid must be captured in an airtight container before it cools. If allowed to cool in the atmosphere, the liquid turns into a dull grey, glassy solid.   The refinement procedure for creating a solid glowing Lumenol, are still in the experimentation phase and as yet there are no definitive reliable methods for its creation.

Distribution

Trade & Market

While it is very difficult to come by, some shop keepers in locations near the source stone may have access to small quantities. Additionally, some magic shops, apothecaries, metallurgists, or even construction guilds may either have some for sale or know how to acquire some, for a small fee.

Storage

It should always be kept in a sealed container in order to prevent the liquid from solidifying over time.

Type
Ore/Mineral
Rarity
Extremely rare in most areas. More common in locations near Lumenite rocks.
Color
The most common color is a translucent white, but it can also be found in other more rare colors. The colors in increasing rarity are yellow, green, orange, blue, red, and purple.
Common State
Until recently it could only be created in a liquid state, with further metallurgical advances and a bit of magic, solid forms are being experimented with.
