Personal history

Prior to her ascension, Selune was once an Eladrin woman and the wife of a powerful Korunai druid. In her time as a mortal, she had gained notoriety for safely leading the druids on their quest to find the location where her husband had said he'd witnessed a shooting star land. She helped their ships navigate the Gulf of Ishkur and trek through the Zandrazil Jungle, where they encountered the crash site of a Je'er planar ship. The Sil'korunai were the first sapient species to peacefully contact the Je'er, a nonnative species that had traveled to Divostra and begun colonizing the jungle. The Sil'korunai shared their magical knowledge with the Je'er in exchange for shelter, with most of the order settling in the city of Sabyn. Selune and her husband were among those who relocated to the secluded city and both of them would rise in prominence within the Sil'korunai after her husband inherited the mantle of archdruid.

Ever since immigrating to Divostra during the Feywild Exodus, Selune had felt an increasingly strong connection with Essen, the plane's silver moon. On clear nights, Selune would spend her evenings out in the garden of her home in Sabyn, entering her trance beneath the argent glow of the lunar body. She would share her feelings with members of her circle; one by one, other members of the druidic order would begin to worship the moon as well, feeling the same strange connection that Selune had. The circle began referring to themselves as the Lun'korunai, which meant "witches of the moon" in Eladrin. One night, a heron-headed woman appeared in the garden with Selune; she didn't speak, but simply watched the elf in silence. The next day, Selune's husband left on a quest to recover ancient relics from the Je'er crash site, an expedition from which none returned. A distraught Selune locked herself off from the outside world, and returned to her garden every night hoping to once again be visited by the heron-headed woman.

A year passed before the heron-headed woman appeared again. This time, Selune broke from her trance and questioned the woman; she asked of her nature and why she had appeared the night before her husband's disappearance. The woman introduced herself as Esselyne, the old god of the moon, and explained that she had been too weak in her previous appearance to communicate. Selune asked why the goddess was so weak, and Esselyne explained that she had been sealed away in the silver moon centuries ago by the Primordial Titans, who were jealous that mortals had begun worshipping her. Her followers had been persecuted by the Titans and the goddess' strength was weakened as the Church of the Silver Heron fell apart. However, worship by the Sil'korunai had begun revitalizing the goddess, to the point that she could contact mortals in their dreams once more.

Moreover, Esselyne explained that Selune's husband had been tricked by a false vision sent to him by Istishia. From her vantage point in the moon, Esselyne had witnessed the Titan's creation of the sea giants and feared of an impending war between the titans and their creations. The moon goddess implored Selune to gather the strongest in her order and venture to one of her abandoned temples located at the summit of the Inamja Cliffs, where she would find powerful artifact that the druids could use to channel the imprisoned goddess' power and fend off the sea giants.

The following day, Selune emerged from her home for the first time since her husband's disappearance. She called together a meeting with Sabyn's political, military, and religious leaders and there she relayed the moon goddess' warning about the Titans and the vision of a lost relic she had been tasked with recovering. Most balked at her visions; after all, she had spent the last year locked up in her home, grieving for her lost husband. However, those of the Lun'korunai who knew Selune as the navigator that had brought them safely to Sabyn and felt her same connection to the moon were more receptive to her visions. Four druids and four priestesses agreed to accompany Selune on her quest to find the lost Temple of the Moon, while several members of their order were sent out as messengers tasked with warning the rest of the Korunai of an impending war with the Titans.
