Gungnir Myth in Discordia | World Anvil

Gungnir

Odin's mighty spear Gungnir remains impaled in Nidhogg, trapped within the tree of life. This legendary weapon holds the power of life and death, and has the ability to slay gods when faced in their true form.

Summary

As Dicordia lay in chaos after the great cataclysm, Odin manifested himself in Fade to protect the root of the Tree of Life that had latched onto to decimated world, but he was not without contest. Nidhogg knew that even one root of the tree could offer him the power to lay siege against the celestial plain. To strike quickly was his plan, so without allies he launched himself in true form into Discordia in an effort to overwhelm Odin. Odin raised a mighty fortress of mountains around the tree to shield it from Nidhogg, and as The great serpent navigated through the moutains, Odin ambushed him impailing him with Gungnir. As Nidhoggs blood touched the root of the tree it enveloped him trapping him. Weakened from the spear, he could not free himself and has lain injured and imprisoned since in the great mountains, guarded by Odin's followers.

Historical Basis

Though little is said about the fight between Odin and Nidhogg, Odin's absence since the great battle, and Hel's obsession with freeing Nidhogg suggest that Nidhogg, is trapped in the tree of life. If Odin had to give up his spear in imprisoning him, then it could be trapped below the tree with the god.

Spread

Life's revolt, believe strongly in this myth, and though they lust after the power the spear could bring them, they will not risk releasing Nidhogg in order to either verify its existence, or claim it for their own.

Variations & Mutation

House Hel tells a different version of the tale. One of subversion and treachery. Where Odin tricked Nidhogg into taking the cursed weapon, and the Tree of Life lashed out to destroy the legendary object because of the danger it posed. They believe Nidhogg has been wrongfully imprisoned in his true form, and that he never meant harm to the tree or Odin.
