Waypoint Beacon

These structures were built by the Orcs to help navigate the desert Surface of Dolwen. Ever since the Desert Elves became part of the Desert Predators however the purpose of the Waypoints also expanded to mark wells, small villages, and trade outpost. Trading has become a quick way to share resources with other tribes and to get new resources from the Underneath and even from other planets.
"These mark the way to any location on the Surface and are important to the survival of all of the tribes. You newcomers better not do anything to disrupt the structures."

  • Purpose / Function

The original purpose of the waypoints was just to navigate but as more Orc and later Desert Elf tribes started to populate the surface the waypoints changed to mark territory, wells, and trade centers. In essence, what were just stones with flags became stones with flags that gave more information than just a simple landmark.

    Alterations

As the purpose expanded some other structures were built around the cairns like pavilions for trade centers and wells were they were marked. The Desert Elves also add special enchanted stones that allow the landmarks to been magically on some maps.

    Architecture

The waypoints are built with piles of rocks that support a flag that say what type of landmark the structure is and an enchanted stone to also convey this meaning and to make finding the different landmarks easier. Since each waypoint has a different reason to point the way there may be other additions to the structure like a nearby well or pavilion. Ribbons or chitin carvings that secured by the rocks tell which of the tribes that are apart of the Desert Predators own the territory ahead.

    Really like that idea.
It's a pretty simple thing (with a pile of rocks and a flag), and yet really ingenious.
    Good Job!
