Irazan city

Ah, Irazan, the city that always seems bigger every time I visit it. I heard there was a need for tools and basic supplies, so I decided to try to make the journey over the ocean. Found a little village on the coast, in dire need of a bit of everything. Next time I visited the village had grown into a small town and they asked for dwarven goods. Now I return just a couple years later, and I see an arcane tower under construction and a skyline growing higher by the day.
- Arethas Runebane, dwarven skyship captain and merchant.

Demographics

A fair mix of peoples, humans, dwarfs, half-elves, gnomes and tieflings. A few drakes, half-orcs and halflings too. Free spirited folk, outcasts, adventurers and entrepreneurs searching adventures in the new world. There has been few births on the colonies so far, so most of the people are directly from somewhere on Irath. Generally the people are fairly well off, as farmlands is plentiful, the spirits are high and the dangers are not dangerous. As long as you don't leave the valley at least.

Government

The colonial government, lead by Rewyen Stonecrest is mostly localized here. Rewyen, having appointed herself Chancellor of the colonies rules everything, and is the ultimate voice of authority. Still she lets most tasks be delegated to other organizations and experts, and according to some it's more efficient than any city on the mainland.

Defences

The water-side has strong walls and some turrets to defend against any aquatic threats. The city also has a wall around it to protect against land monsters and bandits, but due to the current expansion that wall is not getting much use. The city watch is well trained and maintained, and well organized. Additionally there is the secret police.

Industry & Trade

Irazan contains a lot of different peoples with varying occupations, while there are a lot farmers, laborers, hunters and soldiers. There are also a large amount of merchants, artisans, and civil servants. Finally there are the mages, artificers and upper class, although Irazan does not officially recognize nobility, a lot of nobles from the old world still find themselves in the top.   Irazan trades new crops and foods, artifacts, treasures and discoveries for manufactured goods, workers and some ores yet not found on Devaar.

Infrastructure

Simple colonial architecture, with buildings inspired by multiple types of cultures. After Rewyen took power, infrastructure is generally centrally planned using "modern" ideas. Roads, bridges, simple sewers are the state of the infrastructure. The waterside does not have much in the way of docks, due to the threat of water monsters, but rather there are strong walls and defenses. Trade with the old world is done by airships, and an airship tower is under construction.

Guilds and Factions

The biggest faction is the administration, Irazan lead by Rewyen Stonecrest. There are also a lot of other factions, like the Way of Tavella, the circle of thorns, Irazan Mage Tower and more.

History

Irazan was first discovered 1413 by a human explorer, Hilger Altmann and his crew aboard their skyship, Fearless. They were the first to explore past the Atico Jungles and went down to the bottom of the Irazan Plains before turning and heading back. Once they got back they spoke of an empty plain, filled with what could be farmland and good terrain for settling, however it took 11 years and two more exploration trips until a colonization was approved and sent towards the plains.   The early days of the settlement was according to most records and chaotic and dangerous. Hilger had neglected to mention the amount of monsters active in the plains and the early colonists were forced to constantly defend the city. However something approaching a colony was being established, and some of the monsters were being pushed back. As word got out about the success, people from all over Devaar moved to Irazan as these new lands were said to be fertile for farming, full of treasures and adventure. Trough some more struggles with monsters, some troubles with resources and some conflicts from back home the colony survived. Not thrived, but survived.   By 1434, 4500 souls lived in Irazan city, mostly humans but also many gnomes, dwarves, tieflings and half-elves. That year would prove to be a defining year for Irazan, as Reinhard Gottlieb claimed it as a part of the Videl Kingdom. As the news got to the colony along with a airship with a brigade of soldiers, disorder begun in the colonies as two sides emerged. Some of previous inhabitants of the Videl Kingdom and most of the soldiers fought against the citizens other in what was known as the "the shortest war". The initial conflict came as resounding for the colonists victory as the kingdoms troops did not have any planned tactics for deploying from airships. After that, an airship bombing strategy was planned but as both sides had far more destructive power than defenses, and the conflict stalled, into peace negotiations. What happened after this is lost to history, as both sides claimed the other side had set up an ambush at the negotiations. The aftermath was bloody, and the colony once again spiraled into chaos as the previous mayor of the town had died in the fighting. The event was however followed swiftly by a famous speech, Rewyen Stonecrest's proclamation. A minor dwarven noble, she moved to the colonies for unknown reasons and promised stability, equality between races and security if the people followed her. Although not all, many did and it signal the start of a new age in the colonies.

Architecture

The architecture in Devaar is an interesting mismatch of different cultures and styles, further diversified by the early chaotic settling and the later centralized planning.

Geography

Lies on the Irazan Plains, on the estuary of the Inbher River to the great sea. The river gives fresh water and hydraulic power to windmills.
