Known Space

Known Space is the term encompassing the charted areas of space surrounding Desolation. All of Known Space is ruled by the Council of Stars, an organisation based in the Prime Station orbiting MOON-XV. Lying at the centre of Known Space is the planet of Desolation, and expanding outwards from that are the many ships, stations, and settlements upon which people reside.

Major Locations

Desolation

At around the centre of Known Space is the planet of Desolation itself. There are two major fragments of it, one larger and one smaller, as well as a number of smaller chunks of rock floating between them. There is very little other than rock on these fragments, with some long-dead wildlife scattered among it. Some people, known as the Planetary Nomads, try to make their homes here.

The Desolate Ring

Surrounding the planet is a ring of asteroids and other small rocks and debris, known as the Desolate Ring. This ring is very treacherous to traverse, something that can only be done by the most experienced starpilots. However, many useful materials can be found in this ring, such as asteroid ice, a valuable source of water, and zerosilver, one of the most versatile metals for construction.

Major Stations

MOON-XV
MOON-XV, also called the Moon, is the largest station orbiting Desolation. With a population of nearly 34 million, it houses around 30% of the population surrounding the planet.

Prime Station
Prime Station is the much smaller station orbiting MOON-XV, home to the Council of Stars. Travel to and from this station is heavily controlled and monitored.

Ringweaver Station
Ringweaver Station is a smaller station located in the Desolate Ring. It gets its name from its creative method of avoiding collisions with the asteroids of the ring.

Station One
Station One is one of three sister stations orbiting the larger section of the planet. It is vaguely Y-shaped, with three prongs in which different portions of its population reside.

Station Two
Station Two is the second of three sister stations orbiting the larger fragment of Desolation. It is circular, with the two rings of the station running parallel to one another.

Station Three
Station Three is the final of three sister stations, orbiting one of the broken fragments of the planet. It is made of a series of connected cubes, the majority of which are habitable.

Farming Outpost Six
Farming Outpose Six is one of seven orbital stations that were created before the catastrophe that ruined the planet. It is the only one remaining, though it keeps its name, due to the large number six painted on its side.

Stardisk
Stardisk is a large disk with a glass dome on one side. Within the disk, actual buildings mostly separated from one another form cities and suburbs. It is the closest facsimile of life before the catastophe.
