Senmanne Ethnicity in Derkomai | World Anvil

Senmanne

Senmanne (the Central People) are the native people of Senyon that originated along the northern coastline of The Dragon's Tail around the Senyon River and the Great Eastern River and spread inland from there. Over the centuries, there has been considerable intermixing between Senmanne and Azmasanmanne, and it is often impossible to distinguish them by appearance alone. However, there are still families of "pure" Senmanne and of "pure" Azmasanmanne, and some resentment toward the Azmsanmanne nobility of Senyon among some of the old Senmanne clans.

Naming Traditions

Family names

When written or spoken, family names precede given names, as is the tradition in several countries of Derkomai. Given names are not often used without the family name, as the given name by itself is considered an intimate form of address, as between a married couple. Between strangers and acquaintances, only the family name with an honorific is used; learning and being permitted to use someone's given name, even together with the family name, signifies a close or important relationship.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Senmanne people speak Sudkou, though with some differences in pronunciation and usage to "standard" Sudkou spoken in Sudland.

Shared customary codes and values

More than the martial Azmasanmanne, Senmanne value hard work and industriousness. Laziness of any kind is shunned and condemned.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

As among many agricultural cultures, for the Senmanne, ideal feminine beauty is characterized by delicacy, fine features, long hair, and a slender figure. Typically, those characteristics are found only in young women from prominent wealthy and noble families in Senyon , not in those from rural areas, so the beauty ideals of Senmanne favor women from the larger cities and towns, where they are less likely to do heavy labor.

Gender Ideals

Among the wealthier families, women and girls are expected to sew and do other needlework, learn to cook, keep accounts, and maintain a "proper" household. Any sort of heavy labor or martial arts are forbidden to them. For poorer, rural families, women and girls do whatever is required to raise crops and farm animals, along with cooking, cleaning, sewing, and so on.   Men and boys of wealthier families are often small landowners, merchants, or tradesmen; while men and boys of poorer, rural families are fishermen, sharecroppers, or tenant farmers. In Senmanne culture, farmers and tradesmen are more highly valued than merchants, as they produce products with value, but merchants are seen as only pursuing profit.
