In the Depths of the Lifandiloch

Written by Mels

"Gargax Nyaldaashkmeller! I swear they can probably smell you from all the way in Newbeech, what happened to you?" Broodmother Faer tisked at the filthy silver dragonborn youth who, unfazed, continued to play with his siblings. "If you don't come inside and brush your scales right this instant, I swear the Terror of the Loch will eat you up faster than you can say 'dinnertime!" With that, like a bolt of lightning, Gargax was sprinting off to clean up, fearing the wrath of the creature of the depths.

Summary

In the depths of the Lifandiloch, deeper than what can be seen from the surface of the water, exists an underwater cave. This cave is called home by none other than the terrifying creature known as Terror of the Loch. Once an innocent person, this creature was painfully transformed into a disgusting, fishlike creature with cloudy, yellow, slitted eyes, gray and black dappled skin like a snake, long, grasping tentacle growths and a mouth that splits and unhinges to reveal an innumerable amount of needle-like teeth. It is said that this creature's primary diet is decaying fish but in the night it has been known to leave its watery home in search of other, larger prey. Apparently the Terror of the Loch has been known to mistake unwashed dragonborn children as smelly, oversized fish snacks and would slip into a child's room in the night to unhinge its jaw and swallow them whole before slinking back into its cave, undetected.

Historical Basis

Every society has children, and children are always apt to disobey; some parents choose discipline or teaching them to do better, but many societies instead opt to employ frightening tales to scare their youth into behaving. This seems to be the case with the tale of the Terror of the Loch. Dragonborn hygiene is very important and the many ridges of the scales of dragonborn can easily become clogged with debris and parasites if not properly cleaned on a regular basis. Children, however, tend to have more important matters on their minds such as where to go play or what dinner will be and often neglect to brush their scales properly. For this reason, the Terror of the Loch legend was created. Based off the idea of a creature known as a Deep Scion, this story comes across as truly terrifying and a remarkably sufficient motivator to improve personal hygiene in children.

Spread

This is a common household tale in the homes of the dragonborn of Drekiheim, primarily utilized as a method of scaring children into behaving.

In Art

Drekian children have been known to create artistic depictions of the Terror of the Loch and even go so far as to create rudimentary costumes of the creature to scare their friends and younger siblings.
