Collectors

The Collectors are a distinctive faction in the world of necromantic and technological advancement, dedicated to the meticulous and often daunting task of gathering and repurposing corpses. Operating from a sprawling, fortified enclave known as the Sanctum of Renewal, this faction combines arcane knowledge with cutting-edge technology to transform the remains of the deceased into a range of functional and magical items. Their purpose extends beyond mere collection; they see the dead as vital resources for innovation and progress, bridging the realms of necromancy and machinery.

The Collectors view their work as both a practical necessity and a sacred duty, believing that the cycle of life and death is a continuum that can be harnessed for the betterment of society. By blending the arcane with the mechanical, they push the boundaries of what is possible, turning the remnants of the past into the tools and technologies of the future.

Tomorrow is an illusion; everything is ridiculous. Members of the Collectors have witnessed the grandiose speeches and self-important plans of other factions and concluded that most take themselves far too seriously. Since death comes for everyone, and since order tends inevitably toward chaos, the Collectors believe that unrestrained, moment-to-moment hedonism is the only sane way to live. After all, there is honor for the dead so what harm is there is risking joining their ranks?

Diplomacy

Collectors Characters

  • Alignment: Usually good, often neutral
  • Suggested Races: Any
  • Suggested Classes: Magus, Medic
  • Suggested Archtypes: Dark Slinger, Technomancer
  • Suggested Ladder: Occultist

Consider the Collectors for your character if one or more of the following sentences ring true:

  • You are drawn to the ideal of honoring the dead.
  • You like playing duty bound and disciplined magic users.
  • The idea of mixing magic and technology is exciting.
  • You want to waste nothing, even the corpses of the fallen.

Joining the Collectors

If your character was born and raised in Necropolis, you can choose this background instead of those listed in the Ultra Modern Redux rule book.

There is no formal school for the Collectors. You have learned everything that you know from the dead themselves. Joining the ranks means beginning as a member of the Retrieval and Preservation Unit. It is your sacred duty to collect the dead and return them to Necropolis. You must identify them when you can, collecting not only their corpse but their story as well so that they can be honored within the memorial halls.

Background: The Collectors

Your life is devoted to the service of the dead and to ensuring that they are properly honored. You believe that necromantic magic can be like any other tool; if properly employed it can be used to improve the lives of the living. The dead are another resource that cannot be wasted. You act as an intermediary between the realm of the dead and the living world, performing sacred rites and offering sacrifices in order to conduct the dead into the presence of the divine for their final rest.

  • Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, History
  • Tool Proficiencies: Alchemist’s supplies
  • Languages: Choose two
  • Equipment: a set of common clothes and 2 credits
  • You have Renown 1 within the Collectors.

Feature: Shelter of the Devoted

As a Collector, you command the respect of those who share your devotion along with most everyone who lives in Necropolis, and you can perform the rites for the dead. You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at appropriate locations within Necropolis, though you must provide any material components needed for spells. Those who share your devotion will support you (but only you) at a modest lifestyle.

Suggested Characteristics

The Devoted are shaped by their experience in graveyards and out in the wastelands. Their study of history and their obsession with the dead affect their mannerisms and ideals. They are not always comfortable amongst the living.

Contacts

The Collectors generally do not keep track of each other nor make lasting connections with individuals within their faction. Their work is considered a private affair and thus does not require the assistance of others. However, since they command the respect of most Necropolis citizens, they do make connections. You gain two contacts outside the Collectors faction.

Rank and Renown

There are no ranks within the faction and aside from the Grand Harbinger of Renewal no formal roles. Any job or duty is assigned by the Grand Harbinger of Renewal themselves of by those who hold higher levels of renown within the faction. Because having renown still matters. Being known within a group that is scattered and is only loosely held together is a admirable feat and one that is rewarded with respect and favors.

From Ashes, We Forge Tomorrow.

You see a Collector emerge from the shadows, their presence both haunting and captivating. Their attire is a patchwork of sleek machinery and worn leathers, accented with intricate skeletal motifs. A long, segmented spine-like apparatus runs down their back, clicking softly with each step, its joints pulsing faintly with an eerie green light. Their gauntlets are a blend of brass and bone, their fingertips sharpened into delicate yet menacing claws, perfect for their meticulous work. The hood they wear is deep, shrouding their face in shadow, but you catch glimpses of their eyes—glowing with a cold, spectral light that hints at the necromantic energy they wield. Strapped to their belt are tools both surgical and arcane, alongside vials of dark liquid and small mechanical constructs that twitch and whirr with unsettling life. They move with a detached grace, their voice calm yet unsettling, as if they exist in perfect balance between life and death. When they speak, their words carry an air of wry humor, as though they find both the world and their own macabre mission endlessly amusing.

Public Agenda

The Collectors’ public agenda is a curious mix of pragmatism, innovation, and eccentric hedonism. They present themselves as visionaries who transform the inevitable reality of death into opportunities for progress, advocating for the efficient and respectful use of the deceased to benefit society. Through their advanced necromantic technology, they aim to demonstrate how the remnants of life can fuel innovation, bridging the divide between the organic and the mechanical.

Because of this, being a Collector can seem like being an individual with a strong set of personal ideals rather then having the strength and structure of an organization behind you. History

As the immediate threat of the Zombies was contained and the initial chaos after The Fall began to wane, society faced a new challenge: how to rebuild and utilize the vast numbers of corpses left in the wake of the Fall. The dead were seen not just as a threat for infection but as a potential resource. The city’s leaders, recognizing the need for a systematic approach to manage and repurpose these remains, envisioned a solution that would honor the dead while advancing the city’s technology and magical capabilities.

A group of visionary necromancers, technomancers, and scholars formed the Collectors. This faction was driven by a dual purpose: to address the immediate need for managing corpses and to find a way to repurpose these remains for the greater good of Necropolis. Their founding principles were grounded in respect for the deceased and a commitment to ethical transformation.

Culture

The culture of the Collectors is a blend of profound respect, ritualistic tradition, and innovative craftsmanship, all centered around the theme of ethical transformation and tribute. Their societal values and practices reflect a deep commitment to honoring the deceased while advancing the practical and magical applications of their remains. As well as an effort to live in the moment with a deep understanding of the fleeting nature of mortality.
