Introduction

Darmoria has twin moons, one named Tor is on a rapid, close, almost circular orbit while the other Neira is much further away on an erratic, elliptical orbit. Once every hundred years or so these orbit align causing tidal surges and other complications on Darmoria due to the gravitational pull.   In the various cultures around the world these moons have had many different names in the past and many varied stories to go with them. One such story originating in Yalaxos suggests that these two bodies are lovers, the larger Tor chasing his lover Neira across the sky in a never ending struggle to win her affection.   In reality, it is in fact Tor that is the smaller moon by half but because it is much closer, Tor appears larger in the night sky whereas Neira being more than double the distance away appears much smaller.   Another myth regarding these two moons, this one originating from Stoltzlandt says that Tor is a great hunter forever chasing his elusive prey across the night sky. During the time that Neira is not visible it is said that Tor has hunted down his quarry. Whereas in Njärdvahl it is said that these two bodies traversing the sky are what was left over from the Creation Times, although the Great Maker did not want them for the world he felt that these were good enough to accompany the previously lonely world of Darmoria.

The Great Alignment

As was mentioned above, every 100 years or so these two moons align in their orbit. At other times their drastically different orbits keep them from forming the straight line. Although the gravitational effects on the planet are felt at other times, during the Alignment this extra pull on the seas and oceans of Darmoria cause massive surges in the tides, with obvious repercussions on the land, especially at the coast. These can cause massive floods and the occasional tidal waves, destroying everything in their path.
