Londinium

Londinium is the last surviving city in England, it is a megacity.   It's central area, known as The City is a glittering high tech utopia run by The Guilds and their corporate members. The City is protected by a huge bio-engineered dome which protects it from the chemical pollution that fills the air outside.   Outside of The City lie a series of smaller districts, each named after a former town, some parts of these districts are also protected from the outside world by bio-domes, while the lands around are left to suffer in the poisonous wastes, these outlying regions are collectively known as Dark Londinium, due to their lack of access to the corporate networks. These districts are full of the mass of humanity.   Following The Last Great War, the districts were brought to heel, after many years of political struggle with The City, and while some, such as Guildford, remain semi-autonomous most have long since had leaders installed her support the aims of The City and it's Guild Masters.

Demographics

Londinium represents the diversity of England before the war, a mix of native Britains as well as the multigenerational descendents of immigrants to the country.   Within "The City" and the 5 "Districts" age demographics hold at:
  • 21% under 18 years
  • 29% was aged 18 to 39 years
  • 27% was aged 40 to 59 years
  • 22% was aged 60 years and over
In the areas outside the bio-domes, known as 'Dark Londinium', age demographics are:
  • 28% under 18 years
  • 46% was aged 18 to 39 years
  • 20% was aged 40 to 59 years
  • 5% was aged 60 years and over

Government

"The City" is run by representatives of the 110 Guilds, decision making is by simple or 2/3 majority, depending on the issue.   Within "The City" public representation is via membership of the Guilds.   In the "Districts" administrative officers are appointed by The City, and removed as necessary. Public representation is based on who you know/who you can bribe. Normally the areas outside of the bio-dome fall within the responsibility of their neighbouring district, however governence primarily relates to supressing rebellion and ensuring that workers deliver on their required quotas.

Defences

"The City"'s defences consists of a Bio-reactive dome.   The dome was bio-engineered and is resistent to environmental hazards, missile strikes, and when injured can heal rapidly.   To prevent incursions by outside forces (and to prevent individuals from the districts) gaining access the base of the dome is build of 5 meter thick reenforced concrete.   Each of the 5 "Districts" has a smaller dome, encompassing and protecting key areas.

Industry & Trade

"The City" relies on the "Districts" for much of its resources, however, there are a few remaining mega cities in Europe and "The City" still has some access to the Thames, as well as some Blubbership class vehicles that are able to resist the damaging conditions on the contaminated seas.

Infrastructure

"The City" has an immense public transport network. Guild membership allows access to the lines that meet the needs of the workers.   Outside of "The City" transportation is a run for profit affair, most districts are cut off from the others save for what is needed by way of resource distribution or for working needs. Each District has a single protected line that runs to the "City". Where outlying regions have transport networks there are supplied by their associated district, and are normally universally used for moving goods and workers around.

Districts

In addition to "The City", Londinium has 5 "Districts":
  • Guildford
  • Tonbridge
  • Reading
  • Thames Valley
  • St. Albans
Each district is responsible for managing the areas outside of their bio-domes.

Assets

Almost the entire wealth of the nation that was England before the war is concentrated within "The City", though there are a few private citizens in the districts who still maintain large personal wealth.

History

After the war of 2036 ended few nations remained intact. The people of England were forced to retreat to their capital city.   London and several surrounding districts had been reenforced to defend it during the war, and the bio-engineered dome protected those lucky enough to be within it from the worst effects of the war.   Those not fortunate, or rich enough to gain entry to a bio-domed region setup in settlements within the shells of nearby towns and cities.   Eventually, needing resources these settlements were brought under the aegis of the newly formed City-state of Londinium.
