Specter

While the Specter's brother, the wraith, is the ghostly equivalent of the big guy in the bar whos drink you spilled, the Specter is the politician. The being behind and in the shadows, constantly around but rarely in front of you. An altogether more insidious creature.   Specters are formed, like the wraith, from repugnant actions. Actions that would inspire a desire for vengeance. Where the pair differ is how they go about extracting said vengeance. Specters haunt, in the truest sense of the word, their quarry. Specters will very rarely reveal themselves in a physical form, instead opting to manipulating things from the Ethereal. Moving small objects like cups and knives, carving words into walls, and making small sounds and voices in the vicinity of their victim. Nothing major, and sometimes not even enough to convince the victim of the existence of a spirit.   At least at first.   These actions establish a bond with the victim. One the specter can take direct advantage of if allowed to go on long enough. Small things being moved around become nightmares, hallucinations of sight and sound. The victim will do whatever they can to escape these but will find no respite with distance or magic, unless someone spots the attachment. Then the nightmares won't be confined to the sleeping hours, crawling their way into daylight, all the while voices will worm their way into the head of the victim, whispering and shouting for attention.   If the victim manages to hang on for this long without exorcism or suicide, the Specter will have fully established the bond. Through a form of partial possession, the Specter tears at the subject's mind directly. Pulling out memories and twisting them around, and creating illusions that can hurt them. Only a handful of victims have ever been saved when the haunting has progressed to this point.    As with all sorts of spirits, if you can burn the body or destroy the object the spirit has bound itself to, the specter will fade.
