Maussengart Settlement in Dark Age of Ur (First Draft) | World Anvil

Maussengart

Demographics

Major racial enclaves: Human, Elven, Dwarven, Vampire, Ghoul, Reveler

Government

The government is run on the despotism of the church and state. Property only tentatively belong to the individual. People struggle to stay alive month to month and are fed and feed their government. People live and die, and are brought back to life according to the needs of the church and state. The regency of the baron keeps the church in check only by their worship of him as a divine figurehead. The de facto leaders of the society do much of the grunt work at the bottom. Mayors and community leaders fill the holes and dig the trenches along with all the rest of the rabble. Bureaucrats and minor nobility waste their days about drinking blood and fraternizing with the church.

Defences

The first line of defense is a large ravine that cleaves the coastal area in twain. It is a three hundred foot drop to the bottom into a rotten tidal moat where the bodies kept swept out the sea in high tide.
Accessed by four great bridges, spanning two carts wide and eighty to a hundred feet in length they are made of cobbled stone and motar are the city's great gates. Two of the four lead directly into the Pilgrim District where they are protected by a squad of ghouls and their handlers. When the worst approaches Maussengart, the Vampire Lord Baron Gaspar may confront the threat directly to keep his wards alive.

Industry & Trade

There is not much in the way of quality trade in Maussengart, the several guilds that operate in and around the place engage in any of the foreign trade that does travel through. Most of the trade is internal, and even so it is based in the bartering of craft goods. The only legal tender is the use of Foodchits, which operate as a effective currency for their state rationing system.

Infrastructure

The Dwarven community has built a system of mines that dig deep into the earth and have uncovered great reserves of coal and firedust. Due to the high demand of labor they act as an autonomous state within the underground. In the Quarantine district, a massive garden of herbs grows in a land without sun through the fruit of alchemical pursuits. At the top of Maussengart's prominent bluff, a farm soaks the light of the moon and is regularly harvested for starchy Moonwheat . Locally, a windmill at the top uses naval winds to grind the wheat into a flour.

Assets

Maussengart is nestled in the ruins of the Annabelletia, a city ravaged by the hands of the undead. They are lead by a vampire who acts as a masterful strategist and necromancer. The center cathedral is an ancient holy place that is fully staffed with priests and laymen who are capable of performing the miracles of their twilight god.
