World of Dankar

Land of Hidden Things

  In Dankar, the world is your oyster. Its lands are to be explored, and its secrets are to be discovered. Across the world, a new generation of adventurers and explorers are rising, ready to travel the world in the pursuit of knowledge.   It is said that the past is a forgotten country here. Knowledge that was once common is now buried under the deepest depths of the world. The people who once existed are now no more than legends. The protectors that once guided civilisations are in hiding. The world has changed and the information once known are now gone, leaving humanoids without a guide for the future.  

The World of Dankar

The Mortal World

This is the land of all mortal creatures. Here, there are three large continents: the Known World, the New World and the Old World. Surrounding them are gigantic oceans, many of which are dangerous. Scattered across the planet are some archipelagoes. The world has an Equator, the line passing through the centre of the world. The sun usually shines on Dankar's Equator, so all the hottest parts of the world are close to it, while the coldest parts are near the poles.  

The Spirit Realms

On the other side of the Mortal World are the Spirit Realms. It is not one world, but a collection of realms all bound together by Arcana. All manner of Spirits inhabit these realms, some are friendly and others can be aggressive. Exploring the Spirit Realms is not an easy affair, because it is difficult for people to enter it in their mortal form. That, however, has not stopped people from trying.  
 

Magic of Dankar

"Arcana is the energy that binds us all together. We exist in Arcana, and it exists in us."

  The Spirit and Mortal Worlds are linked by Arcana. At its basic form, Arcana is simply an energy that runs through the world. However, people, Spirits and some animals have evolved to harness the energy, allowing them to create interesting effects. These effects are called Arcanis, and is the magic of Dankar.  

Arcanis

For those in the North and East, Arcanis can be sorted into five categories, each corresponding to one Sentinel. The categories are Elements, Nature, Construct, Psyche and Motion. The people of the Old World only have Elemental powers, but are much stronger in it than those of the other continents.

Foreign Magic

The magic in the world also has a dark undercurrent, in the form of what some people call Foreign Magic. No-one really knows where it came from, but the world is infused with this dark magic. Many describe it as a cancer that is slowly spreading across the world, and some see it as the cause of the Ice Age.
 

The Ice Age

A hundred years ago, there was an Ice Age. It was a disaster that froze the world over for about a hundred years. First, the world was flooded, destroying many civilisations and sinking many lands. Then the glaciers and ice sheets formed and almost everything that was left was frozen for 100 years.   The Ice Age brought a surge of Elemental energy that created its own problems. It upset the balance between the Spirit and Mortal Worlds. Foreign Magic that was once contained is now spreading through Dankar. And although societies are now trying to start anew, the seeds of conflict are starting to sow throughout the world.

The Lost Protectors

"We were once protected by the Sentinels, the Dragons and the Spirits in both planes. But by the time the Ice Age came, we were abandoned and left to fate."
— An Elder
  In the past, people were protected by the Sentinels, the Dragons and the Spirits. But over time, they stopped watching over humanity, and now humankind has been left to fend for itself. Centuries of disagreement mean the Spirits now remain in the Spirit World while the Dragons watch humanoids from afar.   Only the Sentinels kept in direct contact with humanity, but when the Ice Age came, they hid themselves from the world, leaving only their technology behind.

Tone & Themes

High Fantasy

Dankar is a mix of High Fantasy, Magipunk and Nautical fantasy. Some of the usual High Fantasy species and tropes feature, but there are plenty of deviations as well. Magic features heavily in Dankar and affects every part of the world.  

Hopepunk

Although Dankar is set in a post-apocalyptic world, it is not a pessimistic world. A main theme of this world is hope, and how collective efforts of people can drive change in the world. This doesn't mean there aren't dark themes in Dankar, but the focus is on how people and society deal with the darker aspects of life to forge a better path for themselves. Nothing in Dankar is truly set in stone.  

Exploration

The world of Dankar is larger than many think, and there is always somewhere to explore and something new to uncover. New lands are always being discovered, meaning there is no complete world map of Dankar. There are many secrets in the world that can be accessed if a person is observant and knows where to look. The pursuit of knowledge is a key focus of this current age.
