Vespica

"Vespica, starkly similar to Formica: the key difference is their aggression and ancestral connection to the arcane. Such traits make outsiders superstitious. Still, I find incredible architectural design to be their most outstanding trait."

-Epiphany, Scribe of Dandoleon
Vespica are often referred to as "Formica alatus," or "winged Formica." Reasonable based on appearance alone, most Vespica colonies despise the comparison due to their inherently tribal behavior. Most Vespica reject the title "Vespica" itself, instead preferring their own demonyms; this is hardly surprising upon meeting one, as they tend to be aggressive and proud.   Like other Hymendia, Vespica has a biological caste system that regulates its politics. That is, they have queens, drones, workers, and soldiers. Their colonies are structured, but see more generalized distribution of tasks than Formica or Apidica, making them appear as jacks of all trades. The same can't be said for their architecture, which displays an advanced understanding of engineering and environmental design. Their living spaces could be located at the peaks of mountains and remain at livable temperatures. Some legends even place distant Vespica colonies deep within Winter, living in isolated, insulated nests.

Arcane Connections

Vespica were the targets of Thanatorum's manipulations during The Breaking of Dandoleon, introducing them to magics derived from his infernal Words of Power. While he had promised them means to save their people from Winter's wrath through Biomancy, they quickly learned the magic was a fallacy, causing their birth rates to decline. Zygomindion, who were particularly targeted, spared their contemporaries by revealing the truth. Zygomindion would eventually decline and lose the ability to reproduce, relying on dark magic to give rise to new generations. Though they still persist today, reliance on Biomancy has pushed them to the fringes of society.   However, many other Vespica commission works from Zygomindion and produce their own benign spells therein. The extensive manipulation of themselves and slaves makes them the most arcanely educated group in Dandoleon.
