Piper's Field

Piper's Field is a merry little village that makes much of it's income from travellers to Prince Lovil and Deepriver. A mostly halfling village, those passing through are guaranteed a warm welcome, warm meal and warm bed- all set off with a cold beer.   It's regular festivals (they have one each month, not just the major ones) are a big draw for those in the region, and it isn't unusual to find more than a handful of tourists spending a tenday or more here enjoying the convivial atmosphere.

Districts

Much of this large village is taken up with the streets surrounding Festival Square, a large paved expanse in the centre. Behind the ring of businesses, taverns and hostelries called the Festival Streets, a series of parks, walks and water gardens form The Green Belt, with quaint bridges and pathways linking them together. Spilling out beyond The Green Belt is The Belly, The Bulge and The Beard, three large and sprawling residential districts to the East, South and North respectively. The Western edge of the village is called The Butts, and houses several large inns, the watch-house, the thriving marketplace, and workshops and warehouses for the various craftsmen in the village.

Architecture

Many of the houses in the residential districts of The Belly, The Bulge and The Beard are earth-homes, built into the slopes of the hills (many formed artificially). This keeps the homes cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and provides plenty of space for gardens and crops.   This flows seamlessly into the elegant lines of The Green Belt, which is characterised with a charming juxtaposition of formal-style parks and walks and homely touches- the 'huddle huts' with benches and braziers, welcoming gazebos and shade trees, sunken ampitheaters for shows and music and hidden nooks waiting for discovery.   The architecture changes again as you get to the Festival Streets and The Butts. Here, tall riverstone and charred cedarwood buildings provide a grey-toned mosaic to the eye, which is offset with the wild profusion of greenery and flowers that spill from the windowboxes under almost every window. The wide streets are paved with contrasting sandstone slabs, making them a delight to walk on, and Festival Square itself has an array of the same charred cedar wooden structures- although these are on wheels that allow the structures to change configuration based on time of year and event.

Geography

Set not far from the banks of the River Lovil, the village is in the perfect temperate band of the kingdom, enjoying wonderfully seasonal weather year round. Fertile grassland stretches out on every hand, and the village is on a very gentle slope in the direction of the river.
