The big crate

In the southeast, peninsula a great crate with some strong magic around is the center of tales, myths and songs.   All the different versions have at least 2 things in common: A gran castle and a huge explosion that leave the crater and the magic.  

The mage and the maiden

One tale says that a mage where in love with a handmaiden, but one of the heirs of the castle, a vile man want her. The girl really was interested in the mage, as all histories of this kind, the "evil" man was rejected, and forced the handmaiden sexually and mentally; the girl commits suicide to scape and the mage's revenge was blow the entire castle in a huge self explosion of magic.  

The bard and the rock

One more cheerfull but morbid song, with 5 stanzas, describe a bard asking for a job in the castle, a great bard performance during a meal, a woman refusing to pay the bard, the bard casting a curse on the castle and a big rock from the sky destroying the castle and leaving only a great crater.  

The Giant and the Gnome

This tale start with a female giant visiting the castle and meeting for the first time a gnome. The giant not only have an enormous body, almost as tall as the great center tower in the castle, but also was an elemental magic savant. The gnome was an older, cunning and an illusionist wizard. As others they came to the castle for a magic show, the giant wasn't impressed by the old illusionist display; moreover she wasn't impressed at all with the gnome and let all know it. Then when the time to show her skill came, she start to scream a the great tower, all the viewers think this was a part of her act, until she blow up the tower, the castle and leaves only a magic filled crater in it's place. After all this she claims the tower transforms in a huge serpent and attack her. Was only a "simple" illusion.

Summary

All the stories and myths are based in the great castle once stood in the site, and all know the crater was created by some huge magic.   Few really know what was the cause. Maybe now this is forgotten.

Historical Basis

The real tale was about a wealthy man that seek to rule, to conquest more lands and riches. He hire adventurers, mages and armies do his biding. As a twist of fate, when he start to growth in power, and began to be a concern for other large humans and elven lands; a group of adventurers found a magical object with vast magical energy.   The man think of this as a gods send object to fulfill his destiny and rule!! He will wild this as a weapon When the object was used only the crater remains. Even now the artifact exist, know as the annihilator  buried hundreds of meters below surface, and is the cause for the magic in the zone.

Spread

Once a site for research, for historians and elven mages. After the The two four war was a reminder of the kind of consequences the non divine magic has.  As other sites like this in the world, a military base or outpost, with dwarves and/or minos in charge; is set to "ward the evil magic" and "protect the lesser races".

Cultural Reception

Other thing all the tales and songs have is revenge. Some cultures adopt more this idea of "just revenge" because the fault; but others see this as a bigger not justified fault.
