Ars Demonica

"It has as many towers as demons tentacles! Just looking at it makes you recoil with disgust."
— professor Alistair about the current shape of the institution
It's really hard to describe the main building of the demonic college - Ars Demonica - due to the fact that it rarely stays the same for very long. It's main structure is somewhat reminiscent of the medieval church it was built out of and then on top of and sometimes even under it. Main reasons? Explosions, demon attacks and other fun magical mishaps. The inhabitants (especially non-magical ones) of Taresh are long time used to avoiding the street where it (usually) stands. Nobody likes a brick in their face, not even the trolls (although they are the only ones able to throw it right back afterwards).   The location of Taresh always meant a tasty treat for the infernals and their various incarnations, therefore an institution that would try to prevent or curb their presence was always needed as long as mankind inhabited these parts of the land. At first it was in the hands of the church, then it got out of these hands on several occasions and into slimy worm like things and then those got set on fire and what remained of the institution with it. And so it went for a couple of centuries, more or less.   Generally, we can divide the history of this demonologist school into 7 main periods:
  1. The Holy Church of Keeping the Temptation Out of Here
  2. The Unholy Church? of Vengeance
  3. The Pit aka What was left after the First Demon Crusade.
  4. Collegium Infernale aka Let's try to not set this library on fire this time.
  5. The Second Demon Crusade aka We are once again hiding in the catacombs.
  6. The Tower of Ars Demonica aka Maybe if we stay really high (up) they will leave us alone.
  7. College of Ars Demonica aka Let's try this again, maybe the steel and concrete will help.

Author's Notes

Czech This Out: My favourite repurposed building is the House of Three Red Roses. This place hides near the Museum of KGB and it started out as a brothel (in)famous for its really loud late night orgies. In 1950, the Central Polarographic Institute was established here (which is now the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry), where Jaroslav Heyrovský worked on his inventions and for those he became the very first Czech recipient of the Nobel Prize. Nowadays, it is the Institute of Contemporary History. Its baroque gardens are under the UNESCO heritage and I used to work on my thesis in this building as its (now former) director was the mentor of our little group. One of the coolest and most knowledgeable guys I met.
