John Kensley

John Kensley is the owner of From Pennies to Penance Foundation, which deals primarily in beast byproducts, especially New Silk . He made his initial fortune through the tea industry, but has since turned his eyes towards the opportunities in Crossroads. He has established Kensley Proper Factory in Crossroads proper, and has become the wealthiest person in Crossroads by his heavy emphasis on highly experimental research and creative utilization of beast parts. The many Daoist harvesting companies still dominate the New Silk market, but it is his company that introduced Budding Cattle, which is now looking to be one of the region's foremost food supplies over the next ten years. He has also diversified into traditional markets, and now holds a monopoly on many commercial goods in the region, though the various religious institutions providing free goods or enforcing Kensley-free commerce zones have prevented him from getting too firm a hold onto the region.

John Kensley believes that civilization should triumph over any nature, even and especially an aberrant nature. As such, he founded From Pennies to Penance Foundation not only to make a profit, but out of a moral duty to take the unnatural and confine it until it becomes natural, through study and domestication. He seeks to heal the Retribution as much as the religions do, but thinks it won't happen through ceremony or prayer. He believes that the retribution was made by Progress, and that it can be undone by Progress.
Thus, with enough study of the Retribution, and the beasts that pour from it, it can be stopped, or even turned to a benefit towards society. It is for this reason that he continues to finance so many ill-fated expeditions into the Retribution Wastes, and that he has entered the peculiar industry of beast-harvesting.
