the Kauje'talaar Myth in Crol | World Anvil

the Kauje'talaar

A tabard crafted of dragonscale of every variety stitched onto the leathery shells of Drakhan eggs. According to legend, the scales were given by the Progenitors. The colored scales are laid out in a pattern, the meaning of which has been lost to time. To the Drakhan and the Dragkhun, the Kauje'talaar represents the unity of the Septs under the Progenitors. It was borne out of the ashes of the Quietus and the unity it represented inspired the establishment of the Drakhan Hegemony.   the Kauje'talaar changes color to match the color changing that all Drakhan do subject to their emotions, as a result it augments their ability to convey compelling arguments to others, making those arguments more convincing to other Drakhan and Dragkhun. According to legend the Kauje'talaar compels the wearer to speak only the truth, and there are many tales of twisted Dragkhun thieves having stolen the the Kauje'talaar only to find that they then could not lie or hide and thus returning it to its rightful owner. The wearer of the Kauje'talaar is protected from all elements by the trust and benevolence of the Progenitors, whose scales it is assembled from.   Its loss cast the legitimacy of the subsequent ruler into doubt, leading the Hegemony to establish its practice of regularly changing leaders in a scheduled and orderly manner, thus ensuring power sharing among the Septs. In the event that the Kauje'talaar resurfaced, its holder could legitimately claim the leadership of the Hegemony, and remain in power so long as they held it.   Young Drakhan periodically go searching for the Kauje'talaar, and the stories of their adventures merely add to the depth of its legend. Nearly all Drakhan and Dragkhun hero stories include a search for the Kauje'talaar. These searches are occasionally successful, but if it is found it is always lost again before the hero can return bearing it.

Historical Basis

The Drakhan Baz Gul'Ankar wore a tabard matching this description as far back as the earliest Drakhan recorded writings, some 2,000 years ago. The founder of the Hegemony wore a tabard matching this description after the Quietus, reputedly the self-same one. When the founder died, it was lost and never found.

Spread

Knowledge of the existence of the Kauje'talaar is universal throughout the Drakhan Hegemony. Knowledge of its fate is not, merely that it was lost, along with the founder of the Hegemony some 250 years ago.
