Einstein-Rosen Project

This used to be the stuff of science-fiction, now it's just science
The greatest achievement of the Golden Age of humanity is, without a doubt, the Einstein-Rosen Project. The device creates and stabilises wormholes, allowing for travel between two points in space - no matter how far apart they are. It was key to the Keln's invasion, as they sabotaged the device and used it to invade.

Discovery

The concept of wormholes was proposed a long time ago, through the scientific research of Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen. However, many doubted the existence of wormholes, and those that believed in them concluded that it would be impossible to stabilise a wormhole without using exotic matter.   Exotic Matter is a rare substance that violates the laws of physics, with a negative energy density and a large negative pressure. Many believed we would never locate anything that possessed these properties - until a strange meteor crashed on to Earth in 2036. This meteor contained a new element that possessed all the properties of exotic matter - perfect for stabilising wormholes.   In 2039, motivated by the possibility of stabilising a wormhole, a group of scientists began to research the possibility of inventing a device that could create and stabilise wormholes that could be travelled through. In 2055, after many failed attempts and years of research, they succeeded. The device was named the Einstein-Rosen Device, honouring the scientists that put the concept to paper over a century ago.

Use

Only one test was carried out, the device worked and a wormhole opened up to another point in space:
We saw nothing but the empty darkness of space, this was to be expected.   The wormhole was not open for long before there was a malfunction, the containment rings that prevent the wormhole from expanding has failed - the portal was increasingly getting bigger. We attempted to shut down the portal, but it was no use. We evacuated the facility and could only watch as the wormhole expanded to the size of a skyscraper.   Then, we saw what was on the other side. An alien army, the stuff of science fiction, began to journey through the wormhole we had opened. It was the end of the world, and we had brought it about.
The Einstein-Rosen Device allowed the armies of the Keln Empire to travel to Earth. It is now heavily guarded by the alien soldiers, allowing further reinforcements to journey to Earth.

Utility

The Einstein-Rosen Device appears like a large portal, as if it were dragged out of science-fiction.   A huge amount of energy is transmitted to the centre of the device, enough to break the fabric of space and open up a small wormhole that is barely visible to the eye. Once the wormhole has been made, the exotic matter is channeled into the device to stabilise the wormhole.   As the wormhole stabilises, it begins to increase in size. As it increases in size, the containment rings on the outside of the device prevent the wormhole from expanding too much - otherwise it would continue to grow to a ridiculously large size.   Once the wormhole has grown and fully stabilised, it becomes usable for travel. The wormhole connects two points in space, no matter the distance, and allows travel between them in an instant.   However, there are issues with using the device. A single Einstein-Rosen Device cannot be used for transport. In order for successful transport, there must be another Einstein-Rosen device on the other side. A connection can be made between the two devices, allowing for a stable wormhole that can permit safe travel. It was this that resulted in the invasion, as the scientist working on the project had no idea that a connection was required. So, when the device was turned on it made a connection to the closest wormhole device - the Keln Empire's.

Manufacturing

The process of creating an Einstein-Rosen Device is laborious and complex.   There are three main components to the device: the generator, the stabiliser, and the containment rings.   Generator
The generator is responsible for creating the initial rift in space, breaking through the fabric of reality and creating a wormhole. It is comprised of several powerful magnets arranged in a sphere. An intense amount of electrical energy is fired at the magnets, causing a brief rift in space.   Stabiliser
This rift is then enhanced by the stabiliser. The stabiliser channels a large amount of Eltrium into the device, allowing a secure wormhole to be created. The device then fires the rift out of the device, towards the centre of the containment rings.   Containment Rings
The Containment Rings are a circular arrangement of powerful magnets. Technically, the containment rings are an optional feature of the device. The generator and stabiliser can work together to create a wormhole, but it would expand to astronomical sizes. Therefore, the containment rings hold the wormhole at a fixed size and prevent this.
Access & Availability
It is unique, there is only one working device in existence at the moment
Complexity
It is extremely complicated, requiring the most advanced technological components and an incredible knowledge of physics to operate

The fact that the exotic matter is available only in limited amount from the asteroid is great for consistency. If humans could produce it, they'd be using it in countless new technologies like anti-gravity and warp drives and would probably be able to reverse climate change. This way they have to carefully choose which basket they're gonna put their eggs in.

I like this as a cool way of looking at what the world you have built is capable of. It would be cool to see links to some other things, like the exotic element so that I could read more on that.

Thanks! I'll definitely be making articles on exotic matter in the future

As stated previously, you draw a nice balance to something that could be extremely overpowered, and I always appreciate basis in reality like this for technology in scifi. The imagery is nice and consistent as well!

Thank you!

Why would the device be abandoned? I havent read much else about your world but if there was a big war going on I sort of feel like a project to make wormholes available for easy transport of stuff or whatever would at least be attempted.

Aug 24, 2018 17:01 by artificial_infinity

The project takes an immense amount of energy and resources, it was decided that research should be focused on other military technologies. It would be possible to use it for easy transport, but this would require more research and time - time that they didn't have.

Aug 24, 2018 05:05

I sincerely hope this technology is discovered in 2101, the implications! On a picky side note, I think the part about the meteor hitting Earth should read "until a strange meteor crashed Onto or Into Earth/the Earth. That is just nitpicking though.   I am curious why this wasn't also considered a military technology, seems useful to warp half your opponents forces, or buildings away? Are they also using the Eltrium for new military research? Probably an extremely valuable resource to possess. Is it's existence secret?

Aug 24, 2018 17:04 by artificial_infinity

Okay, thanks - I'll update the text   I don't think anyone would risk weaponising the device for the purpose of war, it is already meddling with the fabric of space and time for simple transport - unleashing it on an army could have catastrophic consequences. As for the use of Eltrium, they might be using it for alternative projects - we shall see.   Yes, the existence of the Einstein-Rosen Device is a secret - only a few know its location.

I like that the element is limited, is this one of the reasons the project was abandoned? Normally I would think it would help with quick transportation during a war (given enough research and testing that is). Also, where does the meteorite with Eltrium come from? Is it from a place that could be accessible in the future?

Aug 24, 2018 17:06 by artificial_infinity

The project was not abandoned due to a lack of material, it was abandoned so that research and funding could be focused on technologies that could be easily used without much research being required. The device could one day be used during war, but they still do not know how to input specific coordinates into the device - rendering it useless for transportation within Earth.   It is unknown where the meteorite with Eltrium came from, perhaps they may locate it once the device is once again operating.

Nice device! Have read a little on quantum stuff, cool way of transport ;) However, you might want to describe exotic matter a little more, the 'stuff except it violates the laws of physics' is a waaaay overused trope.

Thanks! That's a good point about the exotic matter, I'll research it and try to make it less cliché.

I really love the visuals provided with this article. Is the implication that the aliens used a similar device on the other side to stabilize the portal? If so, do they have no way of using that device again to reach earth, even if it is just one alien at a time through an unstable portal?

Sep 22, 2018 12:13 by artificial_infinity

Thanks. Yes, the aliens have a similar device to stabilise the portal on the other side. They could easily sent one soldier through at a time, but the process is very slow and it would take a ridiculous amount of time to assemble an army capable of re-capturing Earth - the aliens are also preoccupied fighting a war with another species, which is why they left Earth undefended enough to be reconquered by humans. However, they have been known to send singular soldiers occasionally to disrupt key operations and inspire fear.

A few brief questions: 1. West doesn't exactly work at the poles.... All the water is south or north, unless you're referring to the Western hemisphere, which is not exactly the same. 2. Perhaps you should consider relativity, just in case. It is a known problem in the conception of ER systems that acceleration will dilate their relative ages, thus allowing for time travel. The most trivial example for this is to take one end and run it in a centrifuge (rapid easy acceleration) and eventually there will be a noticable time travel effect. There could be ways to work around this- but it will take some relativity knowledge before it can be patched without breaking more laws. One common example is the CTC loop rapidly and forcibly collapsing the wormholes. 3. What are your plans/ideas for renewability and origins (if not materially, simply literally where in space it came from)

Sep 23, 2018 12:45 by artificial_infinity

1) I am referring to the region known as West Antarctica (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Antarctica)   2. I am not going to pretend that this device is 100% scientifically accurate. I realise that there are some scientific inaccuracies with how the device works, but I'll look into what you've mentioned and see if I can work it into the article   3. I do intend to explore the origins of the exotic matter in a future article, writing about the planet where it came from and how it arrived to Earth.

Sep 23, 2018 11:08 by TheEndCreep

First of all, i really like the way that you put a limit on the resources that are needed to effectively use the device. Makes it much more believable and interesting, and i think it could make moments in which it is used much more memorable. I also really like the formatting of the article. The picture of Dr Gerdens Desk gives the whole thing a lot more character and makes it even more believable in my opinion. All in all, this is a great article and a really cool concept!
