Abilities
The Ability System
- Each player is permanently tied to one ability. This makes a player's choice of how and when to use their ability a critical part of their strategy.
- The effectiveness of an ability is heavily dependent on the user's skill, creativity, and experience. The Beacon's rating system values this mastery highly.
- Every ability has a clear trigger, a defined effect, and often a specific drawback or cooldown period.
Recast Night
Once per year, the city holds Recast Night, a special event where players have the option to permanently change their ability. This can be done in one of two ways:
- A player can choose to surrender their current ability and receive a new, completely random one from the Beacon.
- Two players can arrange a direct swap, with each receiving the other's ability.
Recasting is a high-stakes decision. It comes with significant social and ranking penalties, and there is no guarantee that a new ability will be better than the old one. Most players choose to build their entire reputation around the ability they were first given.
