Enedh Pillan Aelin

Purpose / Function

The intended purpose of Enedh Pillan Aelin, or "The Seven Pillars of Enlightenment," is to serve as a bastion of magical scholarship and a sanctuary for those who seek to understand, harness, and preserve the arcane arts. It stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the resilience of magic users, offering a safe and inspiring space for their growth in a world that once teetered on the brink of losing magic entirely. Originally, however, the structure was built as a refuge. In the aftermath of The Abandonment of Magic, a cataclysmic event where all magic nearly ceased to exist, the world was left fractured and fearful of the arcane. The founding of Enedh Pillan Aelin was an act of defiance and hope—a place where magic users could rebuild, research, and ensure that magic would never again face extinction.   The university’s design reflects this history: the seven towering pillars represent the resilience of magic itself, each inscribed with runes commemorating one of the lost disciplines rediscovered in the years following the cataclysm. The central campus is fortified, not for war, but to symbolise protection against the fear and misunderstanding that once endangered the magical arts. Hidden beneath the university lies a network of vaults where ancient tomes, artefacts, and fragments of pre-cataclysmic magic are stored, safeguarding the legacy of magic for future generations.   Thus, while today it is a thriving hub of enlightenment and education, Enedh Pillan Aelin’s very foundations remind all who walk its halls of the fragility and power of magic, and the responsibility of those who wield it.

The university’s structures are both functional and symbolic, creating a harmonious blend of form and purpose. The key facilities are:
  • Abjuration Tower: A tall, fortified structure, its walls etched with protective glyphs and shimmering wards, symbolising its focus on defence and safeguarding.

  • Divination Labs: A series of interconnected chambers filled with crystal lenses and scrying pools, offering unparalleled clarity and insight into the mysteries of the future.
  • Transmutation Tower: Crafted with materials that seem to shift and flow, its walls and interiors subtly changing over time to reflect the art of transformation.
  • Evocation Facility: A robust, industrial-like building reinforced with elemental sigils, designed to contain and channel raw magical power.
  • Hall of Illusion: A marvel of architectural trickery, its façade and interior constantly shifting, creating illusions that bewilder and inspire.
  • Conjuration Courts: A sprawling complex of arches and portals, with open courtyards that serve as practice grounds for summoning and teleportation.
Near the lower gate, accessible to both students and the public, stands The House of Xanzamar, a grand church dedicated to the God of Knowledge. The building is designed to inspire reverence and learning, with its vaulted ceilings, walls lined with intricate murals depicting the pursuit of knowledge, and an altar where offerings of books and scrolls are made. Its location ensures that even those outside the university can seek wisdom and guidance.   The centrepiece of the campus is a towering statue of Xanzamar, holding an open tome in one hand and a quill in the other, standing as a reminder of the god’s ever-present influence on the pursuit of knowledge.   Enedh Pillan Aelin’s architecture serves as both a functional environment for magical study and a lasting monument to the resilience and unity of magic users in the aftermath of The Abandonment of Magic.
