The Glowing Sea

Forming the southwestern border of The Commonwealth Wasteland , The Glowing Sea is a dangerous, radioactive wasteland. Only the desperate, or the insane, travel through it. It is nearly always cloudy or stormy, making visibility dismal at best   This area has only one major settlement: a small outpost of the Children of Atom in the crater left by the bomb dropped in 2287. All of the other locations are ruins, populated only by feral ghouls or animal life that is adapted to withstand the heavy radiation.   Contrary to popular belief, the Glowing Sea is not radioactive due to the bomb, but rather due to the subsequent meltdowns of the various nuclear power plants.

Geography

The majority of The Glowing Sea is very desert-like, in contrast to its name. The ground is dry and cracked, and the only water sources are pools of stagnant, radioactive water. None of these pools are fed by springs or rivers, and the water is extremely toxic to most animal and plant life. Closer to The Crater, the land begins to show signs of liquefaction, with unusual canyons and caves appearing around the crater's edges.   The liquefaction of the land during the Great War has also caused many ruins to be partially preserved underground in a process almost identical to fossilization. Most of these ruins offer no boon to any who might want to explore them, but do offer shelter to the Feral Ghoul populations and bug colonies.   The Crater itself is only accessible after a hardy hike up the side. Inside the Crater is the Sea's only source of spring-fed water. However, due to the spring's source being underneath all of the radioactive fallout from the bomb and the power plant meltdowns, the water from this spring is also toxic to most humanoid and animal life forms. The Crater is also the only area of The Commonwealth that grows Ash Flowers.

Fauna & Flora

Flora: The only notable non-mycelial plant life that continues to exist in the Glowing Sea is the Ash Flower - a plant that grows around The Crater Spring. Treeshrooms are a type of mushroom that thrive on radiation, similar to Brain and Glowing Fungi. However, true to their name, the Treeshrooms can grow up to the size of a small building, and often in clumps of two to three. Pockets of Brain Fungus and Glowing Fungus can also be found in underground areas accessed by natural tunnels or in ruins of Pre-War builings.   Fauna: Due to the lack of plant life, animal life is also rare. Radscorpions and Bloodbugs are the most commonly encountered animal, using the Feral Ghoul population as a food source. Occasionally a Deathclaw will wander in from the nearby Marsh, but they never stay for long. As stated above, Feral Ghouls also form a significant population, though it cannot be determined if they are Pre-War or Post-War Ghouls.

Natural Resources

The only generally useful natural resource to come out of this area is the Ash Flower, whose blossoms can be used to make antiseptic, and whose seeds can be mixed with Fever Blossoms to make an effective fever reducer.   To The Children of Atom, the Treeshrooms provide something akin to wood for thier structures and fires, but beyond that they are not edible.
