Sargassin's funicular

"Melwyn, you don't have to grip the handle this hard!"
"Are...are you sure this is safe?!"
"Yeah, why wouldn't it be?"
"But why does it sound like that? Is it gonna break?"
"You'll be fineee! Just sit down and... enjoy the view!"

-Melwyn and Sorah "enjoying" a ride on the funicular

The City of Sargassin, located in the Kingdom of Gysia, has a very hilly terrain, which makes moving around the city, particularly from the low costal areas, to the hills tops, quite challenging and time consuming. To remedy this situation, a funicular was constructed. It was the first vehicle of its kind in the Continent of Arros, at the time.

Characteristics

Network and station layout

The funicular has three stations, located at the starting, mid, and ending point of a mostly single rail line. The single rail that runs between both terminus station splits into two just before the middle station and rejoins just after, allowing both carts to pass each other and access the middle station seemlessly. Only one of the side door opens per cart here because of the lack of a middle platform. Both the starting and ending station are built the same way. They accommodate one cart at a time, and exits are provided through both side doors.

Cart descriptions

Both carts each contain 10 seats, arranged in a U shape. 4 of them are lined up along the sides of the vehicle, while 2 seats are located at the back. Two door, one on each side are located near the front. The carts have windows on all sides except the front, as well as a small skylight near the back.

Station names and Location

The funicular has three total stations, named according to the district it is located in, or the nearest point of interest. From the bottom to the top, they are: Low-city-port, Kerane square, and Great Suriat of Suzza. Although, most people colloquially call them Lower city, Mid-city and Upper city station, respectively.

Propulsion

Both carts are pulled along a rail line via a metal cable that runs through a series of pullies that are powered by two wobbler engines, located in an underground engine room under the Upper City station quays, although the smoke stacks are visible inside the station itself and over its wooden roof.

Function

The funicular's main fuction is to link the so called lower city located along the bay, to the upper city, which located on top of a hilly plateau. It replaced the many long stairs carved into the rock cliff or built along it as the citizens's main link between both halves of the city.

Thank you for entering the Vehicle special category! It was nice to read your entry. The dialogue at the start was really fun and helped me to feel more immersed in the world!
If you would like me to feature it (or one of your other articles) on one of my Twitch Livestreams, click here for more info.

I'd love to read one of your articles live on stream and award you a special sticker! If you'd like this, too, feel free to stop by my Twitch channel while I'm live and let me know you're watching in the comments. If you don't have Twitch, the easiest way to reach me is to DM me on Discord (WordiGirl) or join my Infinite Imaginations server. My current schedule is published on my Content & Subscriptions page, but things have been a bit turbulent for me lately. As a result, I have occasionally been unable to stream at posted times. I often do pop-up-surprise streams to make up for it, though, so the best way to be notified is to follow my Twitch channel.

Thanks so much again! God bless and much success with your New Year's Plans!
