The MU

The cataclysm that collapsed all of the worlds together wrought great destruction upon all people. Some races were lucky to have some of their cities survive, others with some artifacts of their past, but others still were lucky just to have survived. Worse yet, some of these races had become technologically advanced and had lost the means to control their creations. This resulted in what the Tarans dubbed the Mobile Units, shortened to MU (pronounced “mew”).   The MU were automatons in appearance only; they are spherical, with three pairs of tarantula-like legs (retractable claws and all) and a ball on their underbelly they use to pull themselves along, and a retractable cycloptic head that can rotate 360 degrees. The MU are no taller than a person but about four persons across, not including the length of their legs. These creatures are made of a fairly resilient ceramic and are surprisingly lightweight despite their size. This allows them to be fairly mobile and quick. What’s worse is their versatility of movement: MU can retract all their limbs and turn into a ball allowing them to reach greater speeds then their limbs would allow but without the advantage of sight; they can as well use their limbs to support their weight as they climb.   It is thought that these automata were once constructed this way in service of their makers needs--whether as drones or to replace workers in fairly dangerous jobs. Whatever the case, the MU no longer serve anyone, but roam seemingly aimlessly about the countryside, attacking anyone with their laser-shooting cyclops eye who dares approach. Those that dare approach nowadays are those seeking to defend their homes or otherwise harvest the parts the machine might have spare either in hopes of building new technologies or regaining control over the MU once more.
