Lunatic Profession in Chimera D10 | World Anvil

Lunatic

Maybe it would be rude to say that the profession of being a Lunatic had been banned just 50 years ago, because there are still the mindless, brainless, and vulgar that roam the streets. No law can change that. But its true--those tied to the moon and able to divine the future became a profession banned unanimously--by all countries, but greatly enforced for the Shapers.   A Lunatic is one who ties themselves to the moon by filling the void in their souls with moonlight--the source of magic, and never sleeping again. It is a well-known fact among mages that the most powerful among them sleep the least as arcane power seems to grow as long as the mage remains awake; it is thought that the void in one's soul will expand when filled with magic until that void is all that remains in the mage. As such, it is also accepted that the mage who sleeps the least loses who they are, and must be either forced to rest or put down. Therefore, a Lunatic is a dangerous creature--no longer bound really by their own humanity (that would beg them to sleep) but instead a being of magic incarnate.   Very few mages opt in to becoming a Lunatic, as very few people seek to become monks--it takes great self-discipline to start the journey, and at the end of the journey, that same person no longer metaphysically exists. Not then bound to arbitrary mortal laws, the Lunatic may act with their magical power however they see fit. What stops most from reshaping the world as they see fit is that all people are tied to magic one one way or another, as moonlight touches all things. In the same way, a Lunatic becomes tied to all people. Intention and meaning is clearly conveyed--to a Lunatic there are no misunderstandings, only complete unity with their surroundings and a transcending understanding of the menial and elevated matters of all things. As such, most simply isolate. When sought after, however, they do not hide, but make for good conversation. They do, in fact, make phenomenal relationship counselors, but most people sought after Lunatics for their prophecies.   This is also why the profession, aside from the ultimate self-destruction (or completion?), was banned. While the Lunatic might feel and understand without misunderstanding, they can only communicate this way with other Lunatics. All others barely get a glimpse at the reality that is privy to the Lunatic. Therefore, any prophecies given, while without bias to the Lunatic, are interpreted with bias by all who hear. The prophecies became destructive on a society that was not ready for them--whether because they went unfulfilled, or fulfilled in a way that wasn’t to anyone’s satisfaction.   After hundreds of years of this and without any intervention on their behalf, the profession was banned. Most Lunatics were hunted down, and those who were met with Mercy--by those who would become Shapers--are rumored to live within the Sophia.
