Steinland

A small but wealthy country in the Jernstein Mountains, Steinland is populated mostly by dwarves, but boasts a large immigrant population of races from across the world. Steinland's rugged mountain ranges and rolling hills are peppered with solidly-built settlements, mines, and farms.   Steinland shares a border with Ouennia and with Coronfloralie.   Steinland's major exports are iron, granite, and silver, but some have jokingly claimed that Steinland's true greatest export is art movements. Fully half of the continental art movements and architectural styles of the last two millenia originate in what is now Steinland, including the incredibly famous 10th-century Ninehammer architectural style.   In recent years, Steinland's most important world contribution was its position of neutrality in the Great War. With its heavily-fortified cities and settlements in rugged and isolated mountain terrain, Steinland is almost impossible to successfully invade, and Reik van Goddesvolk didn't even try. Instead, Steinland became the ideal position for fleeing refugees, infiltration by spies, and arms dealing. By the end of the war, its neutral position also made it the ideal location for brokering a peace, at its largest city, Tyrnal.

Structure

Steinland is actually a loose confederation of twelve dwarf tribes, each of which is ruled by a clan head called the dronnig. Each tribe claims a part of Steinland, and the dronnigs rule their portion of Steinland.   Each tribe also has a three delegates (none of whom can be the dronnig of a tribe) to the Council of Ironstone, which makes up the true ruling body of Steinland as a whole. The Council of Ironstone passes laws and decrees which every tribe in Steinland must follow. For the most part they pass laws on commerce and diplomatic relations, and leave other civil matters to the individual tribes and their dronnigs.
