Niskal's disease.
Vaccinations are great (except for in this universe where the government uses it to put nanobots into people). They make us less likely to die when some bacterial, viral, fungal or even otherwise scum get ideas about setting up shop in our bodies.
However, the Niskal's disease vaccination is not a permanent defense. Due to the fact that the body's immune system weakens over time once one starts getting old, the vaccination eventually becomes ineffective unless topped up - except that topping up is very expensive. Thanks to this, the elderly are often subject to Niskal's disease - and it isn't fun.
Transmission & Vectors
Niskal's disease bacteria are able to survive and breed in the air, even being able to continue existing on a planet if all the people are taken off of it. Infection occurs when some get in through your breathing.
Causes
Uhh, the disease existing? Evolution helped along by human interference, mostly.
Symptoms
Skin falling off and leaving the flesh beneath exposed, fevers, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, increased aggression, blurry vision, coughing of blood as your lungs slowly break apart from the inside, death.
Treatment
The best treatment once one has it is using having nanobotic "hunters" injected into you that kill the pathogens but if they reproduce faster than they're killed then you're just giving yourself more time to say goodbye to your loved ones (preferably from behind a 3 inch thick glass wall) or smack even more nanobots into there. Get those vaccines despite the cost to avoid catching it (well not catching it but it being able to get jazzy once in).
Prognosis
Death while skinless. Lots of blood everywhere as viens close to surface without skin over them are easily opened by basic movements and one is coughing up lots of blood.

Vaccinate my man.

History
First appeared on Terra 14 in 2604, most likely due to some mutations with already existing bacteria, and since then has been buggering elderly of the Terra Ring sideways with a teabag.
Cultural Reception
Nobody wants to get infected with this stuff. Some go out with gas masks.
