Imperial Pillar Markers "NAILS" Item in Charron | World Anvil

Imperial Pillar Markers "NAILS"

Travelers are well familiar with the mile markers along Imperial roads and frequently on lands within the Core, as well as the Provinces and steadily being added in the Frontiers. They stand 3 meters tall, and about 1 meter to each of 3 sides. The top is adorned with the Imperial Phoenix.
Many hold the pillars as good luck and shelter under the favor of the Emperor against the hazards of travel such a Warp Storms, Undead, Yokai and evil fae. While the mark of the Emperor is powerful, this may be little more than commoner folklore. The pillars do mark the land as Imperial domain and under the laws and protection of the Empire. This in itself is comfort against the monsters, fell beasts and bandits of the wild Frontiers.
Many nobles also seek the installation of the pillars on their lands as marks of loyalty to the Emperor and empire. It is an offense to the Emperor to place an unofficial pillar. The Emperor always finds out about unofficial pillars.
The citizens and traders of the Empire know the Nails and use them in counting distance traveled. They know them as the mark of Imperial domain - under the Emperor's protection. Few know the extent of that protection, or why we call them "Nails". Each pillar is a spike to raise the barrier between worlds. Working with the The Gateway Seals, they nail down the fractures to stop our world from being overrun with creatures of other realms. This is the protection of the Emperor.

For all the respect and honor, pillars will frequently be marked with scratched graffiti, paint or struck with vandalism. Some are officially carved with direction pointers and distance for towns and cities.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Made of carved stone with a core of jade, salt and iron.  The core is laid with enchantment to raise the barrier between worlds and make it harder for spirits, fae and things from the Fractures to cross over to or from other planes.

Manufacturing process

The enchanted cores are produced and prepared by apprentice Mages in the Imperial school of Magic. The final enchantments are placed by higher rank Mages who have mastered the Magics of Dimensions.
The pillars are placed on a buried concrete base.  This makes them stable and unlikely to fall.

Raw materials & Components
The Pillars are crafted by Imperial commission by local stone carvers. They are installed by Legion forces, while Imperial Mages install the enchanted cores before or after the pillars are placed. Many cores are actually placed by The Imperial spies, called Monitors after the pillars are placed.  How they do this is unknown, since pillar cavities are only open in the base and these are set in a footing pad of concrete.
