World of Ærnth

Written by Adsmalley

The star system that this world exists in has a yellowish-white star near its center.   Ærnth has one very large moon known as the Grey Moon or Fealoich known as the 'night wanderer' in the Ancient Tongue, see Languages of the Channel Cities & World of Ærnth that orbits the planet once every 28 days, and a much smaller reddish-brown "moon" that orbits every 7 days called Weks Moon (in reality it is an extremely large and oblong asteroid that has been caught by Ærnth's gravity many millenia ago and now orbits the planet at a semi-close but safe distance).   Ærnth is the second closest planet to the star, with Hermabu orbiting closer and much quicker and only being visible right before sunrise or right after sunset near the horizon that the sun passed below. There are also a third (Grombo) and fourth (Harmakram planet (both are small gas giants, with the third planet being close enough that it appears as a very bright star while the fourth appears as a dim star) also orbit the star further out. Of course anyone who watches the heavens regularly will notice that these three celestial bodies wander instead of following the paths of the stars or the regular cycles of the two moons above.   There is also a pair of tiny red specks that appear to orbit very slowly (about once every 90 years) and that are always very close to one another. They appear to orbit each other so tightly that they almost appear as a pair of red eyes and as such are known as “Eyes of Othorout”, with one or the other blinking closed every other day or so (as they orbit one another so that part of the time only the closer of the two is visible).   The surface of the World of Ærnth is about two-thirds water, with several large seas and oceans separating several continents, as can be seen on the map of the world:

The lands of Ærnth are broken down into several continents (and additional information about the lands of each of those continents can be reached by following the appropriate links for each Continent's page) as listed here:   Éipláh Continent (or Small Continent)   Lemgláhrúbha Continent (or Great Continent, stretching from the center of the map (0° logitude) far to the east (to about 145° east longitude) and along and mostly to the north of the equator)   Tighláhrubha Continent (or Tropical Continent, just left of center and stretching from about 23° north latitude to about 60° souith latitude on the map)   Mairúbha Continent (or Lost Continent, for those who even know of its existance, shown at the far left and with some islands sitting at the far right edge of the map)   Nósoghéir (or Lands of Ice, part of the southern polar region)
Note that the Channel Cities sits where Éipláh (small) and Lemgláhrúbha (great) continents nearly touch each other, located at the Prime Meridian (0° longitude and 42° north latitude). Note that this is where the second "split" from the top to mimic the shape of the globe occurs.   Also, please note that due to the size of the global map, it is squeezed down a fair amount when it is displayed so as not to cause problems and it is not a truly accurate map of the globe, but was my attempt at showing how the continents are laid out on the globe.   It may be noticed by some who are familar with geography/geology/global-mapping, that the vertical distance (if doubled to show a truly polar circumferential distance) appears to be slightly less than the horizontal (equatoral circumferential distance). But even odder-yet (for those who look closely at the scale and are willing to do the math) is the fact that the globe of Ærnth has a circumference much larger than that of Earth that we are so familar with, but yet it has roughly earth-equivalent gravity, so there must be something odd with its mass (despite the land being of a similar consistancy and density). Hmmm, isn't that odd (imagine or insert a very subtle and slightly evil-sounding GM laugh).   Could this in fact have anything to do with the three other strange and unusual worlds that rumors say are reachable from the World of Ærnth? (imagine or insert a second very subtle and slightly evil-sounding GM laugh).   You have but to listen to the scores of stories and tales told by the many bards and skalds (and 200+ players) who have experienced the many strange and unusual Creatures, lands, and peoples of the Channel Cities and World of Ærnth. Such as A Travelers Questions or take a look at the numerous Campaign Storylines that have been developed and detailed within this setting over the last seeral decades.   Rumors exist of other worlds that are connected to the World of Ærnth, by way of an intricate system of "Gates", "Geata" or Inerlasortal. These rumored worlds are known as Sójaskar, Othorout and the Tetra-Realms or WoÆ-Tesseract. Note however, that full view of these worlds details are only available to those who are Registered to view them.
