J3 Black Swan District of Martelain

Written by Adsmalley

Any adventurers who are new to the Merchant’s Square District of Martelain, will want to check out any of the taverns (J3-4 Red Hooded Traveler, J3-36 The Snails Shell , or the J3-92 The Broken Mug).   As is often the case in taverns, it is easy to hear rumors or meet people who are looking to hire mercenaries for work. Among such, the adventuring type may find any of the following as interesting:   Characters may come across Mosreidge Leomcraef, drinking himself into a stupor and acting extremely depressed. If approached, he explains that he owns a 'secure' building (has been in his family for generations) that he has a purchaser for, but when he went to show it, a group of mercenary types had taken control of it and refused to open the gate (J3-10 Old secure apartment building). He is willing to pay the characters a moderate fee for evicting these squatters from his building once the building is sold (or may even be willing to sell it to the characters as a base of operations for a reduced price after the clear out the squatters). Good starting adventure for about Lvl 5 characters.   More to come as time permits to pull them from the binders and type them up...

The Black Swan District is so named for a swan that had lived along the shore here many years ago (too far back for anyone to remember how far back it was). Rumor has it that as the city of Martelain was growing and much of the coastline had not yet been built up with warehouses and other buildings, this area was where this majestic but strange bird nested along this part of the shore for several years.   The stories claim that the king at that time was the only person who could approach the bird without it trying to attack thus the reason that this was one of the last parts of the Martelain coast to be built upon. Although the stories vary quite a bit as to whom it was that was king at that time, as do how long the creature nested here. Many people think that it is simply an oldwives tale and that there is no basis for it. But who is to say, as it would have been long ago.   Occasionally rumors can be heard at the local taverns about the ghost of the Black Swan, and that anyone seeing the creatures is destined for bad luck for a fortnight. There are also rumors that the bird had been shot with an arrow and died by one of the founders of South Shore and that before the creaturee died, it layed a curse on the lands to the south of that city, thus creating the swamplands that run for a distance down the coast to the south-east from the city of Southshore, but again, who is to say if these rumors are based on fact.   Buildings marked with an "E" are empty/deserted/vacant (and usually in a state of disrepair). While those that are marked with an "H" are homes/houses, or in many cases are a building that is made up of several small apartments/tenaments that are eitehr rented out to those who can not afford to purchase a building in which to live or are owned by those who also own local businesses and provide these apartments/tenaments to those who work for them (as part of their "pay" for their work).   Please note that if the map/image of this district is opened (in a new window or tab) it will show at a higher resolution on most computer systems and will be easier to read, if needed.   The population of this district is roughly 3,500 residents.
