Vigrepar "Longnose" Character in Challaria | World Anvil

Vigrepar "Longnose"

Scalekken Vigrepar (a.k.a. Longnose)

Vigrepar "Longnose" was the youngest grand child of Monsepau "Greenclaw", the Scaleken of the embryonic crew assigned to the fourth egg of Jorrath and Sbrithnir's clutch. In the first decades following Jorrath's death this position was passed down from parent to child and thus at the age of 12 Vigrepar became Scaleken at an age when most drakiss were only beginning their apprenticeships. As Vigrepar matured they became increasingly convinced not just of the sanctity of the egg passed down to them but of their role as the mediator between the drakiss and the drakkun that we to come.

Through force of personality as well as arguments that chimed with the subconscious desires of many of the Morton Drakiss as Jorrath's Crew now referred to themselves having taken service with the Dukes of Morton following Jorrath's death (see The Legend of Carron's Daughter, for the Duchy's take on this) this resulted in the development of rituals of worship to the egg and a belief in the messianic power of the drakkun that was to come and would redeem the Morton Drakiss from their service to the town that had killed Jorrath.

Grand child of the original crew lead for one of the eggs taken back with Jorrath. Vigrepar transformed the normally respectful attitude of the drakiss to drakkun eggs into a religious devotion creating a religion and the counter culture of the "Eggheads" who agitate for breaking the arrangement with Morton and, if not razing it in revenge for the sacrillage of killing their former drakkun, then at least leading a true life.

Mental characteristics

Mental Trauma

The tension between (on the one hand) the belief that the hatching would only happen if the Morton Drakiss were true to their nature and resolute in the belief that they existed to serve drakkuns and not humans and (on the other) the knowledge that it was in the nature of drakiss societies to collapse if not unified under a greater power was a constant source of torment for Vigrepar. Whilst in principle a wholesale submission to the former might bring about the hatching before collapse, Vigrepar had heard from their parents of the collapse of Mordath's Crew - the crew assigned to the other egg that Jorrath had brought back from the clutch. This crew has never accepted the overlordship of the Duchy; retreated to the mountains south of the town and within a year had gone feral, lost their egg and disappeared from all knowledge with their tale passed on only by the ravings of the one drakiss to return carrying the crew's journal.

Intellectual Characteristics

Unlike many drakiss, Vigrepar had little time for the past and history - their view was always on the future and the hatching of the drakkun whose egg had been entrusted to their grandparent. They had a good practical understanding of drakiss psychology and used this to manipulate the crew and develop the Cult of the Egg. Some say this was a point of cynicism and a political opposition to the crew's then leader (a view borne out by study of the Crew's archives) but perhaps explains why Vigrepar took a more moderate path than many of the "Eggheads" of later generations,

Vigrepar and the Egg

As Scaleken for an unhatched drakkun, the egg was in Vigrepar's personal care and exhibited to the Crew at high days, holidas and festivals. These were the occasions that formed the basis of the public rituals of the Cult of the Egg and outside of these it was normally in his private rooms where he was reported to spend much of his time in a one sided conversation with the it. Drakiss practice in egg care usually revolved around keeping it warm and partially submerged in water to avoid dessiccation - a practice Vigrepar followed using a large crystal bowl which had been a gift from Caddock, Fourth Moran Duke.

Appearance

Vigrepar lived to a ripe old age of 62 - unusually long for a drakiss, and whilst drakiss show minimal visual signs of aging, time had taken its toll - Vigrepar is normally thought of bowed with age and guided by a Scalewyrm (see A Drakkun's Crew) for by this stage eyesight was becoming an issue. As tokened by the nickname, Vigrepar was readily recognised by his long nose; he had the red ruff of many of the descendents of Jorrath's crew and this was adorned by a pair of gold Ruffrings - one at the front and one at the back.

Legacy and Impact

There is much debate on Vigrepars' legacy to the Morton Drakiss, and much of this reflects Vigrepar's internal tensions. The Cult of the Egg has without doubt helped to keep many elements of drakiss culture and the study of drakkuns alive in the community, but has also been the source of much division and even civil war with groups such as the Eggheads drawing inspiration from and further extending Vigrepar's philosophy to a point that would probably not have been recognised by its originator.
