She patted down the earth around her newest sapling and looked up at the village around her. She smiled fondly at the villagers going about their busy lives. These were her friends and also her family. Looking back at the new tree, she issued a brief request to the Earthmother, a prayer of growth and health, and she felt the roots of the sapling begin to grow and spread under the earth. Smiling again, the Firbolg stood and walked toward a small mounded hill with a large wooden door.
She entered the door and walked down the short flight of stairs to her small domicile and started to prepare herself for another ritual tonight. As she put on her ceremonial armor and mistletoe headdress, she reflected on Returning to this place. She had very little with her: just these two items and a child in her womb. And within the first day, the child was in her arms.
She strode out of her home and glanced at her son, even now tall for his age and gangly, talking to a young pine tree and asking permission to climb it. She smiled again at him, then turned to walk deeper into the grove of trees. She had led the town in growing these trees on the north side of the village, but she didn't feel any sort of pride or ownership over this place. It was just the way things were supposed to be.
She was a calm person by nature - calm even for a Firbolg. But this place made her feel even more at peace, more connected. Here she could bask in the embrace of nature, and forget for a time the demands and responsibilities she carried as a member of the council. Lorasys was the name she chose for herself when she arrived here. The other villagers needed something to call her. She recalled the name from an elvish tale, even though she didn't remember the tale itself.
She arrived at her clearing - the first to arrive as usual - and sat down to wait.
