Replanting Tradition / Ritual in Cathrea | World Anvil

Replanting

While in some places, Replanting is yet another thing you do out of habit, here, Replanting is done out of respect and as a thank you to nature herself.

Origin

The act of Replanting comes from a time, where the Primal Gods were most involved on Cathrea. Back when Sam'yra, the goddess of earth, was walking among its inhabitants, whenever she saw a tree being felled without one planted after, she caught the one responsible and turned them into a tree themselves.

A Thank you was in Order

Being made aware of this, the people around the world realized, respecting the nature around them is of utmost importance. They started respecting the wishes of nature and only cut down trees with some sort of offering prepared. While the act of Replanting a tree when felling it was never the only way people thank the earth for its gift, it is the most widespread one.

Respect instead of Repulse

Sam'yra made her people aware of her punishing those who disrespect her domain. Thus, the Sprouts of Earth started preaching about her word, urging people to respect the earth as it is a sacred realm no mortal may dare to upset. Over time, the people grew a general sense of respect for their surroundings, slowly forgetting the actual reason of their actions, but merely continuing to do so as tradition.

Replanting In Todays Time

A good thousand years later, the primals have since vanished from the world and only commune with their most loyal followers from time to time. Sam'yra has stopped enacting her wrath onto people, at least those doing wrongs in smaller scales.

Different Iterations

As a result, Replanting has become an age old tradition done so by people with rich history, or by those professionally handling trees, such as the Zvaarian Lumberjacks. For some communities, Replanting is still a holy act, done as it was done several hundred years ago, while some communities have altered the original Replanting and made it their own.
We don't plant one right after felling one, that would be too tiresome. We meet every quarter year and plant a small group of trees in places where we chopped them down. It's honestly a grand time.
