LEGION PUSHES BIZAARE LIMITS

HUMANITY TESTED IN BLASPHEMOUS LEGION EXPERIMENTS UNDER DIRECTION OF SECRET "HUMAN AUGMENTATION PROGRAM"

Our Protectors? Not Sure
By: Nikolai Volkov
The Legion, long existing as humanity's greatest protectors, have since grown too comfortable in their lauded position as "the force that stands between us and the monsters"; perhaps now, as we take a closer look at them, we see who the monsters truly are. They are afforded every luxury and given every benefit of the doubt, and yet, as we look at the news today, they continue to take more than what is granted.

Are we going to sit by and let them take what is left of humanity? We've sat down and talked with ethics expert Sharen Elsgood from Russin, to get her takeaway on just what we should do about our "great protectors" now that we've learned what they're capable of.

Dr. Anabelle Evingston is a high ranking member of the Legion who's name is suspiciously absent on many of these documents; what might she have to say regarding this?

Subject A undergoes procedure known as "First Blood"
"BECOME LIKE GODS"
By: Nikolai Volkov
Dear citizens of Cathedris, inhabitants across the world that are good and not otherwise a part of the Legion's terrible program, today is the day the world changes forever -- once again.

The Legion has created a new breed of man. Not totally human, but something... strange. Our sources close to the experiments have provided us with undeniable evidence to back up the outlandish claims; it cannot be dismissed. Working within the Legion is a group known as The Human Augmentation Program -- seemingly utterly devoid of any and all ethics, their main goal is to improve that which cannot be otherwise improved: the human form.
Disgust and abject terror have swept through our offices just as we're sure they will sweep through your homes, your work places, and your streets upon learning this news. This so-called "Human Augmentation Program", or the H.A.P., have begun to combine humanity with the very monsters the Legion is supposed to protect us from. In their quest for yet more power, they've begun to implant parts and organs that are built from the terrible Rendlings.

Power, but at what cost?
"They have become akin to something... twisted. Horrible. And that's when they survive... I... I can't even talk about what happens when they don't." says our source, who has seen these troubling experiments first hand. They report, with excruciating detail, as well as with photographic evidence to back them up, on how unwilling test subjects are strapped down and undergo surgery, having this "monster organ" implanted within them.

From there, it only gets worse. Most die. Some become monsters themselves. Those who survive though... they get to be subjected to yet more danger, as the next step is to begin pumping Ichor, yes, blood from the very God-husks themselves, the material responsible for creating the Rendlings in the first place... directly into the test subject's body.

"THEY CALL IT CATALURGY"
Against all odds, should the test subject survive the surgery, make it through recovery, and not spontaneously combust or mutate into a horrific monster whilst having Ichor introduced into their body... then an entirely new beast is formed. The gods, and thus the god-husks, have long since been a terrifying enigma of Cathedris; we worship them, but also fear them, because what they are is unknowable to us. The power they have within themselves is enough to nearly destroy the world, and is best left inside the deities. However the HAP, and evidently the Legion as well, disagree with this commonly held sentiment; when Ichor is introduced into these test subjects, the ones containing the monster organ, they're granted a sliver of the gods power. Feats of creation, transmutation, and even manipulation of energy have been witnessed by our source, both within laboratory settings and during field work.

"It's the power of gods in the hands of mortals. They call it Catalurgy -- flow from the gods. It means to draw power from the blood of deities." they report. And it's true, too; when delving into the documents recovered from the Legion's top secret research facilities, report after report is stamped with the word and many permutations of it: Catalurgy, Catalurgist, Catalurgical.   Magic is no longer but mere myth; it has become real, and it is terrifying. We are simply left wondering just what exactly the Legion plans to do with this new power; surely they will report that it's all in the name of stronger firepower to protect us from the Rendlings, but is that really what's going on?
Governments move to copy?
The answer is a resounding "Yes", according to our chief political analyst Jeffery Rost. If this so called "Catalurgy" is in any way sustainable, he says, then we should expect to see governments immediately beginning their own research into it, despite the serious ethical problems that go hand in hand with the research.   Jeffery thinks that it'll go one step further, in fact; "Soon private companies, under contract with the government, are likely going to start trying to harvest as much Ichor from the God-husks as they can. We're likely about to see a whole new version of a 'gold rush' occur across the entire planet."

Documents suggest that in order to achieve specific results, "Catalurgists" have the Ichor delivered directly to specific points across their body, such as hands, heart, or even head.

INCREASED RENDLING ACTIVITY; FINALLY, AN EXPLAINATION

It's a story that we all learn as children, and that we all tell our kids to make sure they both behave, and understand the danger out there. Rendlings: how they're spawned when wildlife comes into contact with blood from the God-husks. For some of the God-husks, those that are in the epicenter of a Rendling hot spot, they spill their blood often, creating constant monsters. However, not every God-
husk on this planet is constantly spilling their own blood. In fact, most are not -- and yet, this year alone we've seen more Rendling events than the last 5 put together, and we're only half way through the calendar. Where are these additional monsters coming from -- and more importantly, how are the God-husks spilling their own blood? Well, with the information we've just released today, the
answer should be quite obvious. In order to continue their creation of these "Catalurgists", and in order to keep providing them the material that fuels their "powers", the Legion would need to harvest as much Ichor as possible. Perhaps different God-husks have an Ichor with different effects. Perhaps some are easier to extract than others. As of this moment, we're not sure.

I love how you've formatted this one. Great to see how knowledge of catalurgy was released to the world. I would be terrified reading this in the paper.

Thank you! :D I'm sure almost every citizen reading this paper was absolutely terrified of the news they were receiving. The world was never the same after this!

This layout is fantastic! Love the old 50s/60s newsprint feel! Also, now I am afraid of surgery, and the doctor, any doctor... Not really, but, this is a good read. Lots there so it took me a minute, but well worth the time.

Why thank you! It was a joy to set up the visuals for this page, and then fill it with spooky news :D

Love the look and feel of this! Great work here as always Stormbril! I very much admire the thought that you put into your articles and the full experience that you're delivering. Am I supposed to hear a Mid-Atlantic announcer voice in my head when I read this, because that's what I'm hearing! Also, I suspect that Nikolai Volkov's lifespan has gotten a lot shorter after publishing this!

Aw thank you so much! :D That is *exactly* the voice you should be hearing, too xD   And it very well might have! He's also secretly a part of the Regiment for Humanity that's actively resisting the Legion, and is thus a high upon the Legion's watchlist for people that they consider a threat -- something may happen to him at some point :O

Imagine being in this world and one day finding out that all the worst 'tropes' are part of your reality - human experimentation, evil corporations, governments carrying out ethically questionable activities, 'gold' rushes, acceleration of dangerous events...I'd be terrified, and I'm horrified just reading the paper from the comfort of my home!   (Love the newspaper format, by the way :)

I would be too!! I can't even imagine how I'd react reading that D:   And thank you, I hope to use it again in the future with more newspaper articles :D

Are you a journalist, because this feels like something a journalist would write! the newspaper editorial form, the commentary, the sensationalizd comments, images, everything!   This content would be right at home in a newspaper (despite the obvious shrinking demand for physical print). I love it! And the content.... ooooooh.   Splendid execution!
