Slaying of Lutolishir

When the earth was young, the Bonte were nomads traveling the grasslands. The elves were shepherds with flocks of cattle and sheep and gathered wild berries, tubers. The Bonte led difficult lives because they were also plagued by dragons that would steal their livestock and children for food. Thus the elves had to constantly move to evade the monstrous dragons and never found peace.   One year a young tribal leader named Thegan approached the elders. He shared a dream he had in which the Bonte would build a wooden fort with high walls and towers for archers to protect their harvest and livestock. The elders were hesitant but allowed Thegan to take a few young men and build this fort, even though it meant fewer hands to help the shepherds or harvest the wild plants. Thegan led the project and over the summer the wooden fort was completed with pens for the animals, storage for the harvest, and towers for archers to defend the fort.   That fall when the harvest was complete Thegan ushered all his people behind the walls of the new fort and placed his archers upon the walls for defense. The dragons attacked the fort but before they could reach the livestock or children the archers drove them off. Many of the dragons were killed and the Bonte burned the corpses in retaliation for their evil ways. That winter the dragons returned to their lairs among the deep forests and complained to their master Lutolishir. When the next spring came Lutolishir alone attacked the fort, though Thegan's men fought valiantly the dragon was too powerful. Lutolishir unleashed his fury, killing many men, women, and children and slew the livestock in retaliation.    Thegan knew his people were overmatched, while Lutolishir spent his time gleefully slaughtering the animals and tearing down the fort, Thegan retreated with the remaining elves to the forest. Upon reaching the trees Thegan and his people became lost, wandering for days. Eventually they encountered another group of elves led by the druidic shaman Imma. Imma's tribe lived wholly among the forests living off the wild fruits and animals as sworn protectors land. Although Imma and her people suffered far fewer attacks from the dragons, she knew the power of their destruction. Imma witnessed the dragon's greedy slaughter of the wild animals. Imma was cautious in aiding Thegan, eventually agreed, devising a wicked plot.   Imma asked Thegan to gather all the food his people had carried with them. She then instructed her own people to gather caches of food they had buried during the winter. Imma then bade Thegan to join her in collecting honey which she fermented into mead. When all the food was gathered, the elves prepared a great feast at the edge of the forest. Large fires where built to roast wild game and the elves sang and danced through the night. Lutolishir heard the songs and saw the smoke and in his greed decided to attack the elves again.   Upon arriving at the feast Lutolishir saw the elves merry with drink and though he knew not what the mead was, snatched it up. The dragon heartily drank all the mead that was prepared and soon became incredibly drunk. As Lutolishir swayed and stumbled eventually collapsing into a deep slumber Thegan and his warriors launched an ambush. Thegan had his men use large cords to bind Lutolishir so that when the dragon awoke he could not move. Thegan and Imma then presided as judge over Lutolishir finding his greed and wanton destruction cause for death. Thegan executed the monster by cutting off his head.   The elves built a pyre and burned the body of Lutolishir as warning to all other dragons. They continued the feast until morning arrived, celebrating their victory. Once the feast ended Thegan made an offer and oath to Imma. If her people joined them in rebuilding a new fort, his tribe in turn would also serve to protect the wild animals and their homes. Imma agreed and further taught Thegan and his people how to plant and tend the wild fruits growing great orchards. Thegan decreed that each spring a feast should be held to honor the victory over Lutolishir and that oak trees should be planted. Thus Imma and Thegan and all Bonte elves became one tribe and serve as protectors over the land.
