The Wyldwood

The Wyldwood is the name of the forest which almost completely covers the plateau upon which the people of The Battanian Confederacy live. It is a thick, old forest, and is widely known to harbor magical beasts and entities of all kinds. It is fed with seemingly infinite waters for Loch Munremair, and the trees have grown taller than in any other forest of the known world.    The Battanian peoples of the region have grown accustomed to navigating it's depths using hidden paths known as "the world roots". These paths are difficult to traverse for any other than someone who has travelled them extensively, as they are know to change and shift over time. Those in tune with the forest itself can often see these changes, and modify their paths accordingly, but those who are not can become lost. Thus, travelers and merchants who wish to traverse the Wyldwood will often hire local guides for safe transit, and (even if they do not worship them) may give offerings to the Fey in hopes that they will not impede their travel.    While the forest may be foreboding to those unfamiliar with it, to those who reside inside it's branches, it is a home that they regret to leave. To one who truly knows the woods, they eventually seem more like protectors watching over you. The danger never goes away though, and those who decide to live in the forest also must deal with it's frequent dangers, such as massive and aggressive beasts, dangerous flora, fickle forest spirits, and the seemingly mundane threats of flooding or disease. But for those followers of the Fey, these dangers are simply part of what it really means to live, to be on the edge of life and death and partake in the circle of life, rather than remove yourself from it or be fearful of it.    The rangers and fighters of the Wyldwood, though much smaller in number than those of the empire, have proved their masterful prowess time and time again; not least then at the battle of Pendraic.    One city exists within the wyldwood, Dunglanys, which is built from imported stone and druidic magic, so as not to disturb the life of the forest. It is illegal to cut down the trees of the forest, and the fields  and glades of the forest are allowed to be cultivated only by the permission of the spirits and dryads. Though few in number, the glades of Dunglanys produce the sweetest fruits anywhere on the continet, and the herbs grown there are said to have superior healing abilities.
