Marunath, the "Horse of the Ford", is nowhere near a river. But Battanian bards love nothing more than an incongruous place-name around which a legend can be woven. In this case the hero Ochlaigan, who was foretold to defeat the seven sons of Glanys in seven duels near seven fords, encountered the last of his enemies here. He slit his horse's throat and crossed over the stream of blood that gushed forth, defeating his last enemy and fulfiling the prophecy.

Marunath is the largest city in the Battanian Confederacy, and is the seat of the high King Caladog and Clan fen Gruffendoc. The city is a mountainside fortress, built partially into the mountains, and was a traditional fortress from which raids against invaders from the South could be launched.

The city was originally founded due to the rich silver and gold veins in the mountains to it's Southwest. Due to this mineral-rich characteristic, the city has a higher than average population of dwarves. Marunath is therefore the commerce hub of the The Battanian Confederacy, since it is where the coinage of their lands is minted.
Due to it's proximity to the The Western Calradian Empire, mercenaries flock to the city to be hired on to raid Imperial lands, or to join in the forces of High King Caladog.
