Unified Nation of Greater Calnis

The Unified Nation of Greater Calnis, otherwise known simply as Calnis, consisted of various states, colonies, and countries. At its peak, it included Magydoch, the United Colonies, fifteen sovereign islands, as well as Greater Calnis, itself a stable conglomeration of three countries.   Throughout the history of Calnis, the borders and member states changed constantly. The third and fourth centuries of King Atharron's reign, and that of Queen Lae-awtha I, were remarkable by their relative stability. However, the history can be broken down into five distinct eras. Each with a generally stable geography.

Culture

Calnis began with a variety of people from many different cultures. However, in the beginning, the population was more focused on survival and building a home for themselves. Initially they were very libertarian, being descended from slaves, and wished to divulge in art and music. This led to some magnificent buildings such as the Twelve Worlds Cathedral, and the many sculptures that dotted the capital city.   Later in its history, Calnis became more authoritarian, and while art was still important, technological progress became considered a more worthy pursuit. By its downfall, Calnis became a continent almost equivalent to 18th Century Britain, and even surpassing it in many ways.

History

After rescuing a group of around three hundred people from slavery, Cõran was promised a new home by God. He followed the signs and led his people across the sea where he set up a colony, which became a nation, which became an empire.   Early Calnissians were plagued by the Hoard, wild fey who resented the immigrants being on their land. The Calnissians fought back, and pushed the Hoard north where fey lived for the remaining time on the continent.   Calnis' power grew, as did its people. More immigrants traveled across the sea, and built cities of their own. Calnis soon swallowed most of these up, they conquered the giant Kingdom of Magydoch, and discovered the already inhabited United Colonies (later called the Western Colonies before reverting back to their original name).   After a millennium of its existence, Calnis began to fragment as many states became dissatisfied with the rule. This was started by the United Colonies, followed quickly by others.   After the Wars of Independence, and the Treaty of Thulubar, the sovereignty experienced little real change in its borders, but the crown slowly became corrupted, allowing for the Tyrant to rise. Even though he was deposed by Queen Siríla, his actions made way for the Emissary to infiltrate the royal court which eventually led to the loss of Calnis beneath the waves.

Disbandment

During the outbreak of the Forgotten War, Calnis was destroyed, along with the rest of the continent.

Demography and Population

The majority of the population is made up of humans, with a few thousand giants, and countless fey.   In addition, there are a few wolves and vampires.

Territories

  1.

    The Founding 1ca - c. 515ca

During this time, borders were in constant flux as domination of the land flitted between the giants, the fey, and the human migrants. King Cõran and his refugees settled at the base of the mountain now known as Ryprogg.   1ca - 30ca The nation consisted only of Minvawnd   30ca - 80ca Tudnellund joined Minvawnd to form the Nation of Calnis   80ca - 100ca Dinyd joined to make Greater Calnis   100ca - 400ca The Unified Sovereignty of Greater Calnis was formed, which included Greater Calnis and Magydoch, together with the islands of Elhaesr, Dheciyesh, and Inyaed.
  2.

    Unification c. 515ca - c. 1090ca

515ca - 600ca The United Colonies joined to form the United Nation of Greater Calnis, and the Western Colonies   600ca - 1040ca The islands of Tuteyiduid, Ebimmá, and Găchivyá joined the Union.   1040ca - 1090ca Biyebyfrã, Rypeib, Nydenyá, and Thyvidlã joined the Union during this time.
  3.

    Wars of Independence c. 1090ca - c. 1240ca

1090ca - 1110ca The wars for independence of the United Colonies. Spurred on by Calnis' growing power, and their subsequent control of 4 more sovereign islands in the past fifty years, The United Colonies wished to gain independence again.   1110ca - 1240ca After the Colonies gained independence, many other islands and Dinyd petitioned the Calnissian government for independence as well. This left Greater Calnis with only two countries, Magydoch, and the islands of Dheciyesh, Rypeib, Ebimmá, and Thyvidlã under their control
  4.

    The Treaty of Thulubar c. 1240ca - c. 1570ca

After minor skirmishes here and there regarding resources, a treaty was created to allow all former colonies of Calnis (as well as the Fey Territories) to allow trade between borders.
  5.

    Reunification c. 1570ca - 1623ca

Under the rule of the Tyrant, Calnis reasserted its dominance by taking back control of the United Colonies.

Military

Calnis' military consisted of a vast navy, a formidable army, and a handful of dragonrangers unmatched in the rest of the world.

Technological Level

Calnis began with refuges from the East, and as such, their technology was limited even for the time. However, as more refugees filled the land, they brought with them brighter minds and new technologies. Soon after its founding, Calnis experienced a leap forward in technological development due to the information provided by The Vessel, and quickly achieved the level of development that wouldn’t be seen on Earth until the early middle ages.   From then on, progress moved forward at a more normal pace until the latter days of the nation where it harnessed the power of magics to produce transportation, weaponry, communications, and all manner of other facilities to the level never seen before.

Religion

The main religion of Calnis is the Twelve Worlds Church, set up by the Vessel after his visions. This religion was merely a way of life in the early days, but became more influential towards the Fall, and in some ways influenced the destruction of Calnis.   Other religions existed alongside the Twelve Worlds Church, primarily observed by other races such as the Fey. However, in the west, the United Colonies had a vast array of religions and traditions, most of which were concentrated to certain districts, islands, or even villages.

Foreign Relations

Calnis had few ties with nations outside the continent itself. Though some ships sailed to trade peaceably with other nations, this was often done with secrecy such that few outside of the continent knew of its existence.   Within, trade changed often from free to tightly controlled depending on the political climate at the time. The Unitied Colonies were the most sought after for their rare silver that was extremely useful in medicine, particularly in the treatment of lycanthropy.   Magydoch, the giant kingdom, also held many natural resources sought by Calnis, but the giants themselves weren't always willing to trade. It was not until Magydoch was incorporated into Calnis that the resources could properly be mined.   Calnis had problems with the fey population since before its very inception. Though fey were never really trusted in Calnis, and the feeling was mutual, they were often accepted as independent arbiters of various treaties.

Agriculture & Industry

Like most developing nations, agriculture was a major part of Calnissian industry. Towards the end though, this was improved by better technology to allow Calnissians to indulge in other forms of employment. It was often stated that Calnis excelled in art, philosophy, and literature, but this may be an exaggeration, as very little survived the destruction. The Chronicles of Calnis, being the most well preserved account of the continent and its prophecies, does show this predilection towards art, as it is more than a simple collection of writings.   Manufacture of ships was also a major industry, though this was rarely shared with any other culture.

Trade & Transport

Trade was limited in the early days, being conducted primarily by traveling merchants, either by small carts, or larger caravan chains, and even by some large ships. Soon, when shuttles were common, cargo could be transported from one end of the continent to the other in a matter of days. On occasion, a dragonranger would be tasked with courier duties for important objects.

Education

In the beginning, Calnis had no formal education, with children and adults being taught only what they needed at the time. As the country grew, much of the knowledge was passed on through the church and specialised tradesmen via an apprenticeship.

Infrastructure

By the downfall, Calnis was connected via a vast network of shuttle tracks that allowed most people to quickly travel to and from each major city. The smaller villages, however could only be reached by roads, some of which was not as well kept as the shuttle tracks.   Each major city also had a Dragonkeep, so that the Dragonrangers had somewhere to arrive, though this was not always used.   Most homes were built from wood, with a stone wall surrounding larger settlements. All members of the Lineage, and even some commoners, owned stone mansions and castles.
