The Continent of Calnis (kalnɪs)

Written by jrcsalter

The continent, classically referred to as Calnis, resided west of Europe in the mid Atlantic Ocean. It was the home of many legendary figures, and was instrumental during the beginning of the Forgotten War. The downfall of Calnis is often regarded as the catalyst for the War, during which the Knives of Calnis were stolen, which directly led to the liberation of Sifellon and the darkest days for all humanity.   Today, Calnis lies at the bottom of the ocean. Many expeditions have been made to explore the region, but none have been able to find it. It is now believed the destruction was more than merely physical, and that the continent was shifted into another dimension, or phased into an alternate timeline. The only way to reach it is through the mythical Key to Calnis, but as of yet, no one has been able to locate it.

Geography

Calnis is an island that spans approximately two thousand kilometers from tip to the southernmost island. It is located in a mostly temperate region of Earth, though it does have a mild desert to the south.   The continent is home to the following locations, variously organised into unions throughout the history of the continent:
  • Minvawnd
  • Tudnellund
  • Dinyd
  • Ealhaelul - The United Colonies
  • Magydoch
  • Tucüdh Aenr - Fey Territories
  • Eahaesr
  • Biyebyfrã
  • Dheciyesh
  • Inyaed
  • Tuteyiduid
  • Rypeab
  • Nydenyá
  • Ebimmá

Fauna & Flora

The fey claim to be natural to Calnis. While they were often closed off from foreigners, it has been possible to get some information from them. And what we have appears to contradict their claim, being more supernatural than not, though whatever else they are, they are almost certainly native to the land. They have had a troubled history with the humans arriving from both the west and the east. Like the giants, they hadn't formed civilisations at the time of Cõran's arrival, being more like feral beasts, and providing the colonists with their first real battle. However, something changed shortly after their defeat, and they were able to group together, forming their own settlements to the north.   It is believed that wolves, popularly called werewolves, originated from Calnis. It is unknown exactly how this happened, but studies have linked the shapeshifting abilities to that of the fey.   Millennia before humans arrived on the continent, giants roamed the land. While they are distantly related to humans, they had little to no civilisation to speak of, and it wasn't until King Cõran settled there, that they organised into rudimentary tribes. Being one and a half, to twice the size, of regular humans, they required a much denser bone structure than regular homo sapiens. As a result, their brain is little larger, and they were unable to be intelligent enough for much more than basic social groupings.

Natural Resources

The wealth of Calnis consisted mainly of red diamonds, and the interesting properties of tamba silver which grew in a crystalline structure like thorns jutting from the rock. These two in particular made both the Unified Sovereignty and the United Colonies rich when trading with other nations, though they rarely shared technology.

History

For most of human history, the Calnissian continent was uninhabited by any civilisation. Wildlife developed independently of the rest of the world, and while much of its flora and fauna is unremarkable except from an academic point of view, there are a few interesting developments. Among the most relevant were the tribal giants. The king, being unwilling to fight them, reserved the land they predominately used, and it became the province of Magydoch, named for the tribe leader at the time. During the expansion of the Calnissian colonies, this eventually became completely enclosed by Calnis, eventually becoming an official province of the sovereignty in 153 CA.   To the west lies an archipelago of almost a thousand islands. These islands were colonised around the same time as Cõran landed with his refugees. Tribes migrated from the American continents had traveled east and formed their own colonies. Over the course of Calnissian history, the ownership of these islands switched back and forth due to the extreme wealth hidden in the Silver Mountains.
