Western Provinces Cricket Association

Introduction

The Western Provinces Cricket Association (WPCA) is the overarching governing body for the sport of cricket on Calmarendi, responsible for the laws of the game, the structural organization of its constituent associations and governance of the sport's elite level competitions.

History

Cricket, it is generally reckoned, was brought to Calmarendi by the original settlers and, unlike other games and sports, has not evolved very much since. [Anyone arriving today from 1930's England would have little difficulty understanding everything that was going on at a game, except for the fact that women would be out in the middle playing rather than in the pavilion making the teas.] Steeped in its own ancient etiquettes and traditions, it should come as no surprise that the WPCA is headquartered at the Vienna Cricket Club in Eden. Its foundation date is always quoted (though without any shred of evidence) as being 001-1-01-1 to symbolize the belief that it (or at least the Vienna Cricket Club) has never not existed.

Organizational Structure

  • The Western Provinces Cricket Association comprises the six Provincial Cricket Associations.
  • The Provincial Cricket Associations are made up of County Cricket Clubs and Associations, the county clubs and county associations being distinct and separate entities.
  • The County Cricket Associations are made up of individual local cricket clubs which form the base of pyramid.
