Naming and Designation of Galaxies

Calmarendian Perspective

As most of this document is (or should be) written from a Calmarendian perspective, we are using the Calmarendian names for galaxies and other celestial entities, where they exist, in preference to those by which they may be known on Earth.

Where an entity is unknown or unknowable to Calmarendian science or society, or is of such relative insignificance that no one has ever gotten around to naming it, then we will fall back on Tellurian naming.

Common Frame of Reference

Even though Calmarendians have no knowledge of it, in order to create a common frame of reference for galaxies that may have different names (or none) on Calmarendi and Earth, we will also reference such entities by their number in Earth's New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (NGC). In this scheme we would reference our own galaxy as NGC 3031 whether we are also referring to it as the City of Stars or by one of the names by which it is known on Earth.

To create consistency, we have made one addition to the catalogue: NGC 0. This references your own galaxy, the Milky Way, which we know as Galaxia Linda.
