Etymology

Bath takes its name from the baths built here by the Romans.

Alternative Name

Aquae Sulis

The Latin name given the town by the Romans was Aquae Sulis, meaning "Waters of Sulis". Sulis was, by all accounts, a deity from Celtic polytheism worshipped at the thermal spring of Bath around which the Romans built their baths; they associated her with one of their own goddesses, Minerva.

In which County is Bath?

Bath lies within the boundaries of the historic county of Somerset and, at present, lies within the modern ceremonial county of Somerset. However, as at 10 April 1992 (the beginning of the events narrated in Visions in Blue), Bath was part of the County of Avon.
