The Lords' Alliance

History

In the later stages of the Great War of Valanor, the people of the Kingdom of Walgnar were feeling the effects of the conflict, with constant food shortages and mandatory army drafts. Some of the more forward thinking nobility pleaded to the king to try and broker a peace, but he vehemently disagreed.   A group of these nobles, led by Sazir, staged a rebellion and overthrew the Walgnar dynasty, establishing a confederacy of city-states that is now known as the Lords' Alliance.

Government

The main ruling body is a council, composed of influential people from various aspects of life, that oversee the socio-economical well-being of the confederacy. The cities that make up the Lords' Alliance are largely independent in most aspects, but the Craigavon-based council makes sure no settlement is without essential resources, and centralizes the military forces, ensuring a well-manned guard force for every village and town.

The Craigavon Council

The council of the Lords' Alliance is made up of people that are elected by their peers. The full council members are as follows:
  • The Archmage, whoever is the current Head of the Academy (Varys Siannodel)
  • The Master of Coin, which is someone elected by the Merchants Guild (Grilgus Lutgehr)
  • The Master Engineer, elected among the members of the Tinkers Guild (Alston Garrick)
  • The Master of War, the highest-ranking military officer (Captain Bor Kulenov)
  • The Councillor, a descendant of the founder of the Council, that serves as a mediator (Sazir)

Military

The Lords' Alliance possesses a strong military, still a necessary holdover from the times of the Great War. The combined might of their army and guard force is somewhere in the neighborhood of 27000 strong, plus their elite Battlemage regiment, which numbers somewhere in the 2000.   Most of the army is kept in reserve, with only a small force being active and serving as city guards. This active force is considered the first line of defense, and is therefore extremely well trained and equipped. For reference, the standard city guard equipment is:
  • Half-plate or scale mail armor, plus shield
  • A shortsword or a spear
  • For officers, a blue cloth sash with silver embroidery signifies their ranking
The battlemages are easily distinguished by their robes, which resemble normal wizard garb, but possess armored plates in strategic locations around the body, to protect the vital parts while allowing the wearer to retain full mobility needed for somatic spell components. In a conflict, they are usually deployed alongside their non-spellcaster counterparts, fighting in the frontlines as support and mobile artillery. During peace time, they often act as scouts or spies, with a small elite subsection being trained to operate undetected in enemy territory.

Geography and Population

The Lords' Alliance comprises of all the villages and cities across most of the western side of Valanor, south of the Dwarven Kingdom, and north of Bluind. They have made some incursions into the Great Expanse, but apart from small villages and military outposts, the gross of their territory is westward. The towns and villages of that make up the Lords' Alliance have a mostly human population, with a fair bit of halflings and gnomes. Some dwarves have also settled here, mainly due to the ease of access and friendly relationship with the Dwarven Kingdom.
