The Men of the Wild, the Black Rangers

Calanthi was founded on the north coast of the Great Sea.  The land was generally wild and in the location they picked it was dominated by open prairies of lush grasslands; perfect for what they needed to establish a new kingdom based on agriculture.  But this land was the used by nomadic Orcs that followed herds and survived on hunting.  The establishment of Calanthi brought the Orcs and Humans of Calanthi into direct competition.   Calanthi had a big blessing in that the Orcs were spread out and their culture didn't require a good communication network and this made it easier for the men of Calanthi to bring in troops and supplies necessary to build a base of operations that would help them stake a claim to a portion of the land.  And this they did.  But it naturally left the humans at odds with the Orcs from that point on.   The king of Calanthi only wished to establish a border to the north with the Orcs and then develop the land south of that border.  But, because there was a constant risk of an invasion or raid into Calanthi, soldiers adept at operating in the wilderness were needed to maintain a buffer and an early warning network against the Orcs.  And these men were named The Men of the Wild.   The Men of the Wold, or MotW, were mostly rangers and soldiers that had no family to care for and they found great satisfaction in the brotherhood of their common struggle, and generally enjoyed living in the wilderness and didn't enjoy farming or living in a settlement.  They were promised a place to rest if they were badly injured or became old enough to want to walk away from patrolling, but the details were a bit vague.  Subsequently, the tradition is the Rangers take care of their Own, so they live close to civilization in one of the rear area camps that move supplies out to the wilderness where the MotW need them.   The men operate in teams of 4-6 members.  They are fine archers and attempt to observe the Orcs from the greatest distance as possible.  They avoid direct conflict with the Orcs as much as possible, but the Orcs know they are there, somewhere.  The MotW are experts at concealment.   The MotW have learned that there are four groupings of Orcs they are likely to see.  A Clan group will include tents, families, wagons and a few draft animals.  They will have warriors and horses.  A clan group follows the herds, kills what they need and processes the carcasses to make use of almost every bit.  They also have to be mindful of where they will get water, so they can't remain far from water for long.   The second group is a War Party.  A War Party will include an hundred or more soldier age Orcs, sometimes including females.  Their culture is based on power and warrior traits.  When a chief is offended he will often go to war with another clan.  He will not seek redress with the regional chief.  He will settle the matter himself.  The MotW were only concerned when these war bands became especially large indicating a high level unified group, or if a large enough group were to begin heading deliberately south.  A large band of unified Orcs headed south would be a problem.   The third group was a Hunting Party.  A Hunting Party would normally be comprised of 30 or more warriors/hunters, and they would be mounted with great spears.  The MotW learned to predict what they were going to do on a hunt and found them easy to avoid if they were spotted at a great enough distance.  Also, at 30 or so hunters, such a group could be easily defeated by a team of rangers.   The fourth group was usually a chief and some close friends going on a ceremonial hunt for lions or other big game.  These groups were also easily defeated if necessary and generally easy to predict.  But they were also feared by the rangers because if they interfered with a ceremonial hunt it would anger the chief and that could come at a severe cost.   Now, very occasionally, they found or blundered into a group of young warrior Orcs that were doing the opposite of what the MotW were doing.  These younger Orcs, so 15-20 years old, had been told their whole childhood that the MotW were out there ready to capture or kill them if they didn't do as they were told and wandered off instead.  Because of circumstances, every Orc Clan had heard and seen evidence of a run-in with the Black Rangers.  Their arrows were too finely made with steel points.  When there was a clash the evidence was clear.  So every once in a while a group of younger warriors decided to wander off and hunt the Rangers to give them reason to retreat from the Orcs.  These confrontations were one sided in favor of the men, but usually resulted in losses for the men as well as the Orcs.   The MotW would patrol their areas and rotate off and let another team patrol the area.  They would retreat a little and provide a report.  Then they would get a good meal and begin the journey forward again.  When their ranks were flush enough the men spent one-third of their days patrolling, one third coming back, and one third moving up.  They would trade sectors for patrolling to break up the monotony but for a while it was the same every two weeks.  Once they grew to high-enough rank they would spend time at the camps doing organizing and analyzing.  They were always looking for trends and changes to indicate something was coming.  If they became wounded, they would come back to camp and perform camp functions while they healed up.  There was some training to do for recruits and there was always maintenance on equipment and tentage.  The ranger's life was a busy life.  But they loved living under the stars.
