Bene Timber's Letter concerning Orion

The King of Calanthi has established a group of Messengers that were to also be his spies within Calanthi. This order of messengers grew to become the Diplomatic Corps of Calanthi for many reasons. One reason is that it became apparent that someone with oratory skill and a cool head needed to deliver sensitive messages, often with bad news, to other members among the noble classes and this was best handled by folks trained as diplomats. The Corps soon became dominated by Bards because they had the abilities and skills and also had the benefit of magic to help them in their cause.   So Bene Timber began his career in public service carrying messages to nobles in the area about the town of Crossroads. There, he learned and practiced his trade under the eye of his mentor, Andante, one of the most famous Bards of the Corps. Bene Timber had to also observe the health of the common folks, the merchant class, farmers and everyone else. The king asked The Corps to do this as they travelled the countryside so he could learn of the problems facing his people and look into them if they seemed to reflect neglect by the local nobles.   After a visit to the March of Pegasus, a County on the northern edge of Calanthi in the Duchy of Orion, Bene Timber wrote of the Corps to report his observations on the nobility there. During an important meeting concerning the visit by The Silver Dragon, Argent Terrible, earlier in the month, the nobility were summoned to the Barony of Vega in order to discuss what they should do. The nobles argued among themselves neglecting the main issue, which forced Bene Timber to exercise his authority to impose the will of The Crown on the local leaders. It was the lack of care for the issue that grieved Bene Timber and so he wrote to request that the Corps advise the king of the need for action.
To the Lord of Orion's Affairs at The Corps, Symphonia, from your most loyal servant Bene Timber, Ambassador to the North, I bid you good health and prosperity.    This very evening, a meeting was just concluded in Vega among the nobles of Pegasus including the Marquis Villefort, his brother Marshal Villfort, his eldest son Baron Villefort II and his brother Baron Stephen Villeforte, Baron Mondego, Baron Danglares, his holiness A.Bp. Rutherford and Bp. Wallace, along with some members of the Men of the Wild and adventurers, where the collected nobles were tasked with deciding how to approach the Orcs in the open plains as recommended by his Eminence, the Dragon. The nobles were predominantly against using the Men of the Wild or any of the men under the Marshal to undertake to contact the Orcs.    Ultimately, under your authority I persuaded a few to concede we should help this group of adventurers make contact. However, it is the nature of objections brought forward by the nobles assembled that grieve me the most. They argued that despite any admonitions from His Eminence, approaching the Orcs would only invite misery and strife upon their baronies. Their thoughts were only of their troubles establishing enough farmland to achieve their harvest quotas and little else.   I urge you to have another messenger visit these nobles on some matter to have them prepare a detailed profile of the situation in order to decide how their selfishness may best be addressed. Also, please share this with His Majesty so he will know of this dilemma. I fear a shake-up will be necessary. I believe His Grace, Duke Talbot, is a well meaning fellow, but he is not up to the task of forcing these noblemen to see the bigger issues at stake. He has found a syndicate of thieves and extortioners and given them titles in reward for their roles in fighting the Orcs in the recent past. They are much better suited to fighting Orcs than leading baronies, and we should make use of their real talents while allowing noble men to attend to the duties of a nobleman.   I am speeding to Scorpio to see how affairs are going there before travelling to Orion. Long Live His Majesty. - B-T
