Void Lagoon
The Void Lagoon is a body of water located in Southeast Vefaria. The black color of the water comes from decaying plant matter releasing tannins in the water. By area is is the largest such black water lagoon on the continent of Kenerif and is the only one visible from space.
The Lagoon is technically the sunken river delta of the Lekagar (Black River), itself one of the larger rivers on the continent of Kenerif. The water itself is brackish in nature, and species from both freshwater and marine environments are represented here depending on the part of the lagoon. The lands surrounding the lagoon are either low lying forests or marshlands.
The Barrier islands to the east are alluvial in nature, having been built up by sediments from the Lekagar. The sandy beaches are mainly composed of silicon dioxide and are relatively shell free, though there are several isolated locations that are more shells than sand. Most of the islands are either low lying forests, or marshlands, and the eastern portions of these islands have extensive dune systems that supports nesting migratory animals, mainly Kiurnals, but also several species of birds and mammals.
In the past, the area wasn't seen as that important by anyone other than some minor military value to keep control over the black river. The settlement on the south bank of the Lekagar, Vorem-wreth, has been abandoned for centuries. That city mostly sprang up around an even older fortress built by the nation of Bevari around 600 Before Exodus, when they started exerting military control over Vefaria. During the War of Purges in 263 Before Exodus, Vorem-wreth had extensive shipyards and with the efforts of thousands of workers, could launch a small frigate every other week. When the war ended, the reason for the town's existence also ended, and it was slowly abandoned over the centuries. Now all that remains are decaying wooden ruins and what few large stones remain of the old fortress.
Void Lagoon Nature Preserve
This Lagoon is also unique in that it helps support one of the largest living creatures on the Planet, a Skyshell that measures almost 300 meters across. This creature is so large that it affects the entire ecosystem around it. It has a primitive root structure formed from its tentacles that reaches from its location on the north shores of the Lekagar, into the lagoon, and all the way out to the barrier islands.
Aside from this creature, there is a large amount of biodiversity to be found in these waters, more than any other coastal region on Kenerif with the exception of the Ladgan Swamps and Keys. Because of this, the nation of Vefaria designated the area as a nature preserve at the recommendation of the Collena Preservation Society around 300 years ago.
