Roilen M21

Article Contents

The Roilen M21 was one of the first service weapon on Earth to use electromagnetic coil technology, specifically magnetic coils that pull and propel the bullet down range at very fast speeds. The weapon has a unique magazine design that includes a rechargeable battery and 21 rounds of ammunition.

While newer designs use different methods of stabilizing the bullet in flight, the Roilen uses a rifled graphene barrel and lead or copper lined ammunition, spinning the bullet as it leaves the barrel. This weapon has far fewer ammunition choices compared to other gauss weapons because of this, but it is hard to beat the accuracy of this handgun.

History

In 2020, the first commercially available coilgus could be purchased. They were 3d printed and generally non-lethal except at close range or with certain types of ammunition. By 2030, coilguns were made that could easily kill at longer ranges and were almost completely silent. Many nations redefined their laws to define coilguns and railguns as firearms so they could be regulated and banned. The leadership of several militaries saw these weapons and thought they would be useful someday in combat.

In 2031, the US Army held a competition between several companies to develop an electromagnetic handgun that could replace their current sidearms. The SIG Sauer M17 was the most common weapon in use, though many units were still carrying the Beretta M9. The terms of the competition were to design a coilgun that had similar operating characteristics to these handguns. The Model the Army eventually chose was designated the Roilen M21.

The weapon experienced production delays due to a problem with the coil design. The weapon had issues propelling a projectle at the required velocities in such a small package. When this problem was fixed, test units were sent to soldiers in the field. Initial testing revealed that the weapon outperformed its original specifications at the 2031 competition. It was also extremely quiet and produced no noticeable recoil, offering incredible tactical advantage over traditional firearms.

In 2037, the Army officially adopted the weapon to replace its other sidearms. It was used in five separate conflicts over the next twenty years. By the year 2057, most nations had at least one type of gauss weapon in their arsenal. The United States was developing a replacement for the M21 and was starting to deploy gauss rifles on the battlefield.

Author's Notes

This article was mostly practice with figuring out the formatting and look of any future weapon articles I might make, and creating an earth based weapon was as good of a starting point as any. Eventually I am going to get around to designing the alien weapons.

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it!   Also, The css tabs are actually made by Stormbril (https://www.worldanvil.com/w/cathedris-stormbril/a/spoiler-button-tabs-article). It isn't hard to style from the base css if you know what you're doing.
