Adkur Andra, literally Mud Lizards in english, are a genus of medium size Ekandra. They get their name from their habit of rolling around in shallow mud and sand for warmth and protection from stinging animals. They are among the few ekandra that are both aquatic and terrestrial are one of the only types that can live entirely on land or in water. They can easily live in either salt water of fresh water and again are one of the only ekandra than can do this.

They are warm blooded animals and quite intelligent, often living in groups near the water's edge. When they aren't hunting they are very chilled, relaxed animals that bask in the sun and do little else. They are often kept as pets by many different Regalti cultures. These reptiles are smart enough to recognize their owners and oftem act very friendly towards regalti.

Akur andras are a medium sized animal, being around a meter long including the tail. While they don't appear very large, they are dense and fat animals, often weighing between 25 and 35 kilograms. They are able to run up to 20 km/hr and can swim at roughly the same speed.

Their mouths are quite large in proportion to their bodies, allowing them to eat quite a bit of food in suport of their metabolism. Adkur andra are omnivores and are known to eat literally anything short of plastics and metals. They can discern different types of food with their large eyes and have well developed senses of taste, smell, and hearing.

Akur andras comprise of roughly 32 species and sub species, and are found all over the southeastern area of the Kenerif continent. They are especially diverse in humid climates around The Sunken Lands. The greatest variety of these reptiles can be found in the Lekagar River Basin and the Ladgan Swamps and Keys. They can also be found in large numbers across the Shattered Plains and the Athalin Scrublands

Evolution

Around 60 million years ago, when most Ekandra were evolving to become ever more dependent to live under water, a branch group stayed in the shallows. They maintained a powerful fan shaped tail to propel themselves forward in water and kept their limbs so they could still run on land.

While birds and mammals became dominant on land, these reptiles had the advantage of being able to jump out of water and run for short distances to eat just about whatever they wanted, then scurried back into the water before a much larger predator could get to them. This species started out eating the eggs and young of other animals but quickly evolved to eat just about anything they could fit in their mouths. Their primary hunting tactic is still stealing eggs and getting away and into the water as quickly as possible.

Size comparison between a Regalti and an Adkur Andra. There isn't a large variance in size between different akdur andra species and most are told apart from each other by the shape of their tails and dorsal fins.

As Pets

Thousands of years ago, the hunter-gather regalti society already had several domesticated pack animals like Galin and Kesmodons. The regalti that lived near large bodies of water also domesticated the Adkur Andra. Originally they were used to seek out nests of other animals. Long after the Regalti became an advanced society, adkur andra remained popular pets due to their high intelligence and low temperment

There are some some things that need to be kept in mind when keeping one as a pet...

  • These reptiles like rolling around in the mud for protection from the elements and to help maintain their body temperature. Even when in a temperature controlled area they try to find something to roll around in, to scratch their skin and to cover themselves with something to feel protected.

  • They have a habit of getting into clothes and paper, then rolling around in them, ripping it to shreds. Some companies make tear proof sweaters you can put on your mud lizard. Doing this stops them from getting into things.

  • If you let them sleep in your room, they get annoyed if you don't let them sleep under the covers with you. They like warmth and will try to lay around or on top of you whenever you are home.

  • They are affectionate creatures and demand you scratch them at all times of the day. Every season they completely shed their skin and often demand more scratches during this time. They eat their own shedded skin so you will probably never find one laying around the house.

  • Females lay six hard-shelled eggs roughly once every three months. If the eggs are non-viable, they will quickly eat their own eggs within a day or two. This means you won't have a rotten smell and a few nasty surprises a few months later.

  • Adkur andra can be litter trained or can be trained to go outside. If you decide to litter train them, make sure you use the right material, or they will just roll around in their own filth and then track it throughout the house.

  • Mud lizards eat anything and everything that they can fit in their mouths, and they will do so if you don't feed them regularly. They require a kilogram of food each day. They can eat table scraps with little issue. Some companies manufacture specialized pet food for them that has all the nutrients they require.

  • They can be trained easily with sweet tasting treats, but the thing they truly love are spicy Chirens, also known as fire fruit.

  • They can recognize their owners voice and face and will come if you call their name. They will recognize and follow audio and visual commands from their owners while ignoring everyone else.
